Theobroma Chocolate Lounge, 1 Utama

August 20th, 2008, Jason

Sam Tham, a photographer for Star Publication, was free to meet up with me after her assignments at Serdang. After picking me up at KDU, we headed for 1 Utama for a drink. She suggested we try a new outlet that specializes in chocolate. Immediately, I recalled of this chocolate selling outlet at one corner somewhere near Chilies / escalator to GSC.

Indeed, we ended up in Theobroma Chocolate Lounge.

Originating from Australia, Theobrama Chocolate Lounge made its debut in Malaysia by opening its first outlet in 1 Utama, followed by another outlet in Pavilion KL. As its name suggested, its signature product is nothing else but chocolates.

Looking at the menu, it has a huge range of chocolate filled, chocolate made and with chocolate products for you to choose from, while you chill out with your friends. Of course, you have the chocolate fondue thingy too, served with four different types of fruits to go along with the thick chocolate. As for the drinks, its nothing but chocolate-related.

Sam had Snow White Frappe, basically blended white chocolate with chocolate shavings and powders on top of it. The side of the glasses are “decorated” with thick chocolate as well. She said it was very sweet.

I can’t remember the exact name for my drink, but I reckon it should be Iceberg Lady. It’s chocolate drink with a scoop of vanilla flavoured ice cream in it. After some intensive stirring to melt the ice cream, the chocolate “milk” tasted really creamy and extremely smooth.

It was really good, but it has a huge problem. It was so freaking sweet that one might just get diabetes the moment he stepped out of the outlet. To make things worse, the drink wasn’t cold at all, it was warm. Warm and super sweet, not a very good combination, if you ask me.

We had something to eat. I don’t know what’s it called, but it has a muffin shaped brownie tasted kind of cake, served with four really small strawberries with chocolate poured over it. Lets assume its brownie although it might not be, ok?

The brownie was served warm and it has this fluffy texture which I absolutely adore. My tongue could barely taste anything after drinking my freaking sweet chocolate milk. However, it tasted pretty nice after I dipped some of the brownies into my drink and ate it.

As for the strawberries, they tasted like strawberries. Duh!

While I wouldn’t mind patronizing the outlet again, the sweetness of the drinks is something that I don’t like or look forward to. A really huge glass of cold water might solve the problem but your appetite for the day might just go down the drain after that. I felt really bloated and my tongue was kind of numb after I left the place.

The place itself is really nice to sit down and talk some craps with your friends over a good cup of coffee or chocolate. Generally, it was still a pleasant experience in Theobroma Chocolate Lounge.

Hop over to KampungBoyCityGal’s review on the same outlet. Some of the photo credits go to them as well.

Shogun Japanese Buffet Restaurant, 1 Utama

July 30th, 2008, Jason

We had our first gathering at Shogun Japanese buffet restaurant. Honestly, it wasn’t my suggestion. In fact, I strongly disagreed after reading the many reviews and feedback from various blogs which wrote how they sucked.

I suggested Lemon Grass cafe at Shangri La, KL initially but Raymond said everyone was having a tight budget and said Shogun Japanese buffet restaurant was the best choice as it was cheap.

J : “Why would I want to pay for the food that I already know it is going to suck?”
Raymond : “You should find out yourself rather than reading what other people has to say.”
J : “No. It is against my will to go Shogun.”

However, with many of us budgeting (Not me, them!), we had no choice but went ahead.

It sure looks like a nice place to dine in, with all the warm lighting and atmosphere. Tables are placed with enough space between each other and to bump into the guest’s chair of the opposite table is not quite likely to happen. The food tables / sections are conveniently placed right in the middle / center of the L-shaped restaurant and everyone has similar distance to the tables.

Plain old tasteless green tea was served upon seated.

Not long after you sit down, they will serve you a plate of cheese baked giant (maybe not so fresh) oyster. Each patron is entitled to one only. To me, it didn’t taste that nice as the cheese and mayonnaise totally overpowered the taste of fresh oysters.

As for the rest of the food, they tasted just average and nothing to shout about. Even the unagis didn’t look that tempting to an unagi lover like me. Their sushi was worse than Sushi King’s, totally not fresh and cold. There were only a handful of dishes that I managed to identify that tasted good.

Overall, it was a disappointing one and I don’t think I will visit them again.

Raymond : “Man… The food really sucks.”
Jason : “Didn’t I tell you so?”

Sushi Groove, Again

November 14th, 2007, Jason

Although my objective whenever I come to KL is to eat something different and try restaurants that I have never try previously, there are bound to be situations where I couldn’t think of anything new or there are no makan kakis to bring me around, I tend to visit the same old restaurants and places again.

And so, Sushi Groove was one of them. Since I have blogged about it before, do click on the link to read a more complete review eating experience at Sushi Groove.

It was my sister, Jamie’s lucky day that she called while May Gin and I were on our way to 1U. Being the kind and awfully nice brother, I went to pick her up so that she could join us for dinner.

We placed our orders and food was served in a nifty. First up, salmon sashimi. Fresh and tender, dipped with a little soy sauce mixed with wasabi. Nice! We also had the spicy beef hamburger, egg with rice. I ordered the same thing during my last visit too. Tasted pretty much the same still, a good sign that they maintain their standard and quality.

The curry chicken rice bibimbab came highly recommended by Nee and I placed my order for this dish the moment I sat down. Heh!

The rice was served with hot stone, burning the rice to create a slightly burned yet crispy “burned rice” (I am pretty sure there’s a specific name for it, but it slipped my mind.). Right in the middle of the rice was a raw egg and chicken cubes, which was meant to be mixed up together. On top of the rice was a kind of fish (柴鱼), that seem to be dancing / moving on top of the rice when it was served.

You need to stir them as soon as possible (before the rice gets too burned), hence, get your camera ready.

I can’t recall what was the sushi’s name but I think it was on the top ten favourites for September 2007. It has cili padis in it but I don’t think its spicy at all. The waiter recommended us this sushi and we bought it. Definitely worth trying out.

We also ordered Godzilla Roll, which was a plate of sushis with shrimps and mangoes, topped with cream cheese on top. Absolutely delicious. Although I couldn’t really taste the shrimp, the flavour and colour combination were unique and eye pleasing respectively.

And definitely, my unagis! I ♥ Unagi! Yes, that is also the name for their unagi sushi. I ♥ Unagi!

Heh!
