My Desperate Attempt To Buy UWA Lens

Desperate time calls for desperate measure.

In order to have enough money to buy an ultra wide angle lens for my Canon EOS 40D before I embark my journey to a foreign land, I resorted to buying lottery.

Numbers bought are 1022, 2201 and 3545.

The numbers are found on a Canon EF-S 10-22mm F3.5-4.5 USM lens, the truly ultra wide angle lens for cameras with a cropped sensor.

The difference of an image at 17mm (with my current lens) and 10mm (with the ultra wide angle lens) is simply huge.

Another example of UWA at 10mm by the photographer Narrowband.

Sighs. Dream on, Jason, dream on.

That’s a Tokina in the pic. How much a Tokina costs… I think Canon one should be about RM2.5k and Tokina maybe just under RM2k?

Wei, kena lottery you buy one UWA for me also, okay? Wakaka

The 10-22 is a great lens to have. But you can always consider the Tokina 12-24 f4. A wee bit not so tele than the 10-22, but the build.. fuah!!.. like a tank. And it is about RM500-600 cheaper. Woot!!

Anyways, hope you get your UWA soon :)

    You’re tempting me leh… coz I really can’t decide on Canon 10-22 f/3.5-4.5 or Tokina 12-24 f/4….. OR between Canon 24-70 f/2.8L or Tamron 28-75 f/2.8

What do you suggest?? Price is a lot of difference I know, but lets put that aside and talk abt the lens :P

Narrowband : It’s all your fault. Hmph!

Sean : That’s why I said, desperate attempt.

Wen Jing : About RM2350. If you want really wide picture, this is the lens.

Edo : Its one heck of a poison because UWA really gives a different perspective and dimension to the pictures. Sighs. It’s all about the money.

Neo : That’s a Canon lens with a Tokina filter on it. I would still prefer Canon lens over 3rd party lens anytime.

Kamkuey : If I want UWA, I would really go for the maximum width I could get. Hence, 10mm would be more tempting compared to the 12mm. Moreover, I prefer Canon over 3rd party’s. :D Hopefully, hopefully.

Nkwai : LOL. Don’t bluff me lah, takkan you don’t know how to buy 4D.

Chong : LOL. As if we will ever strike.

Kai Hong : The pictures were taken at different season. I grabbed the image from two different lenses.

Calvin : 20D? Still in production or third / forth hand? Haha. Get the latest model lah. :P Haha. As for which one to choose, hold the camera and feel it yourself, your heart will tell you which one to choose, the dark side or the light side. Also, do check the picture, both produces different result even under the same lighting / environment.

    Bryan : Yaloh. Haihz. Sponsorship?

Sue : I shall reply you on MSN. :D

If you’re planning to upgrade to full frame body later, get 17-40 4L or 16-35 2.8L, they are far more superior than 10-22 UWA which can’t be used on 5D/1Ds etc.
And.. L lens range, optical quality is much better than normal EF-S, adding to that, 10-22 costs almost the same as 17-40L! Thus, better long term investment..

Alternatively, consider Tokina 10-17mm, canon mount. Can be used in any 1.6x cropped body as well as full frame. Surprisingly, the reviews were quite good on this 3rd party lens. I would consider getting one too haha..

    10-22mm on 1.6x cropped = 16-35.2mm, FF= NIL
    10-17mm on 1.6x cropped = 16-27.2mm, FF= 10-17mm
    17-40mm on 1.6x cropped = 27.2-64mm, FF= 17-40mm

    Just my 1.5 cents.

Nkwai : Jalat you. Haha. Want me to teach you?

Harry : I know about that, but it will be years later before I have enough cash to upgrade to full frame. As for the quality of L lens, I have been long poisoned. Haha! However, I certainly didn’t know about the Tokina’s 10-17mm though. I will check it out then. :D
