My Canon EOS 40D

As mentioned before in my “Random Stuffs” post, I have finally got the project kicked off.

I always do my research and ponder the pros and cons before I set my eyes on a gadget and go all out for it. Regardless of the price, if I want it, I shall get it, just like my RM285 Logitech VX Revolution Laser Mouse, RM1600 Nokia N70 mobile phone, RM2480 Panasonic Lumic DMC-FZ30 digital camera and my RM4000 HP Pavilion dv2201tx Notebook. I never hesitate or being doubtful over my choice because I know that’s what I wanted.

However, for this particular project, not only I brought forward my plans due to peer pressure (No thanks to Ah Yong.), I hesitated for many days and even weeks. Even up till the night before, I was doubtful about my choice and whether was it wise to buy it.

Well, I decided to just close my eyes and plunge myself into it. I made the jump and gotten myself sucked into a never ending spending spree. I bought this.

Credits go to Sean for loaning me his Sony CyberShot to take this picture.

Yes.

Canon EOS 40D with EF-S 17-85mm F/4-5.6 IS USM kit lens.

In fact, I didn’t only get those, I got more accessories to go along with it.

Credits go to Sean for loaning me his Sony CyberShot to take this picture.

1) Battery grip BG-E2N for Canon EOS 40D
2) EF 50mm F/1.8 II Prime Lens.
3) BP-511A Battery
4) SteinZeiser Camera Bag
5) Hoya HMC 67mm UV Filter
6) 2GB SanDisk Ultra II
7) Heavy Duty Tripod

Why Canon?

Simple, because it’s Canon. First of all, the brand name Canon has been around for quite some time and the reputation has spoken for itself. Also, having used a few Canon digital cameras previously, my dad’s Ixus, the office’s PowerShot G2 and G3, I was and am happy with the pictures that Canon digital cameras produced. Not only that, my working environment, where most of the media photographers are seen using a Canon, particularly the Canon EOS 1D Mark II and / or Canon EOS 20D / 30D and many L lenses, it gives me the confidence in Canon. Oh, I also like the orange-y colour and feel in my pictures.

Why Canon EOS 40D?

It was a very tough decision between my initial ideal dSLR, the Canon EOS 400D and Canon EOS 40D. Budget was the biggest factor and the question of “Do I need the semi-professional camera?” kept popping into my mind. I certainly love the weight, LiveView, extra and more powerful features and the unique shutter sound of the Canon EOS 40D compared to the Canon Digital Rebel XTi. Again, budget was a factor.

With much persuasion by Ah Yong and the guy at the camera shop, I decided to spend that extra money to get the better one, hoping that it will cap the upgrade possibility in any near or far future. Getting the Canon EOS 40D is basically the furtherest I would go and the most money I would spend for photography, not more than that. It should be my second and last digital camera for the rest of my life because the next upgrade to Canon E0S 40D are the Canon EOS 5D series (RM8K) or the Canon EOS 1D (RM16K). which are totally out of my league.

Buy first, think later.

I hope that answered most people’s question.

Now, that I have bought a semi professional level camera, I need to get slightly and more serious with photography. The learning curve is going to be very steep from here on and I am really glad that I have a geek sifu Yee Hou who is more than willing to answer my stupid questions and give a pointer or two, provided he is free, of course.

Also, I am starting to learn how to use Adobe Photoshop, so that I can make use of the RAW function of my camera. I shall refrain myself from editing the pictures but to present what I have snapped at that particular moment. I tried to pick up Photoshop sometime ago but I gave up as it was just not my thing. This is my forth time picking up, again.

Well, I am going to do some adjustment to the picture size used in my blog. Previously, most of my pictures are set at a standard 320 * 240 resolution for faster loading time and a neater and uniformed look. Do I sound like a perfectionist? Heh!

However, due to the difference ratio between the old camera (4:3) and new (3:2), the pictures used from this post onwards would larger (420 * 280 resolution), with an average of 60Kb in file size and about one to two seconds longer loading time, depending on your connection. This is to take advantage of the clearer resolution and details captured by my camera.

Also, I am introducing my Flickr site at http://www.flickr.com/photos/jasonmumbles/ where I would upload random photos I took with my camera. Well, the thoughts of starting another blog for my photos are still lingering in my head. We shall see.

Last but not least, there are a few people that I need to thank, because without them, this won’t be happening in the first place.

1) Aprilcherrie for the referral.
2) Bryan for the cash advancement.
3) Yee Hou for clearing my doubts on many issues related to dSLR.
4) My mum for loaning me RM1,000, on the very last minute. The catch? 2% interest.
5) Ah Kit for letting me swiping his credit card, or else, I would be carrying really a lot of cash and walking around KL.
6) No thanks, but still thanks to Ah Yong for brainwashing me to getting this instead of the Canon EOS 400D and the peer pressure.

I got my camera from,

Jean / Mr. Lee
Billion Photo Sdn. Bhd.
G9, Ground Floor,
KL. Plaza,
Jalan Bukit Bintang,
55100, Kuala Lumpur.

03-21428970 or 03-21428971

I know what you are going to ask, the price, right? I shall not disclose as my parents are reading my blog its terrifying. LOL.

Well, that’s the story for my Canon EOS 40D.

P/S : To help protect your business, surveillance camera systems can help you a lot. There are a lot of different types of surveillance cameras available to choose from based on how complicated you want the camera to be. For awesome prices on a surveillance camera, check online.

    Whoa… you’re really loaded man… Bordering 5-figure eh?

Chingy: Multiply that by 3, thats more realistic. Your estimation can get only a 400D.

BTW, I’d strongly urge you to join some Flickr groups (read: I mean A LOT of groups) so that you could send your photos to those groups and participate in the relevant discussions. Trust me, you’ll learn better and faster in discussion groups than to try figure it out yourself.

Like we always say, “Learn from other peoples’ mistakes, because you don’t have time to make them all.”

    Chingy : Heh! Nope.

Narrowband : Haha! Not really bordering 5 figure yet, still quite far away from it actually. :P

Felicia : Must ban my sister from revealing the stuffs that I am going to blog about. It just spoils all the fun and anticipation. Wouldn’t it be cheaper if you buy from KL?

Allison : What is the best part you referring to?

Hung Wei : Maybe not. Am looking at the Tamron 17-50mm F2.8 actually.

矮子 : Since I can afford it at that moment, why not? I certainly needed the extra battery though. I got a big enough bag already. :P

SilverIsle : Thanks! Upgrade? Not so soon, kind of broke already.

Satkuru : Congratulations on your new camera too!

Che-Cheh : Haha! I think its a more like a beast to me, rather than a babe. Haha! Oh, what a coincidence. I think the price is quite nice too!

    Hao : Yes. that soon.

Giovoni : Yes, everything all nicely kept and documented.

Kim Fei : What can I say? Haha! Work more and save harder!

    双喜妈妈 : 私下告诉你。

KY : LOL. Why so harsh on Yee Hou? At least, he has answered a lot of my questions. Yes, I am already looking at the various upgrades. Sighs, more money spending.

Ah Kwong : I want to learn how to use the built in flash first before I move on. Besides, I yet to get myself familiar with the camera. Flash light can wait.

Fattien : That’s because 40D is a good camera, that’s why so many people want it. Haha! Why silver again? Black is nicer.

Pelf : Thank you. Yes, I will do that soon once I found a nice group where there are people who is willing to comment and critic. My photos are still very beginner-ish, if you ask me.

    Jamie : Heh! Good!

Han Ping : Haha! You should ask the more professionals photographers, not me. I am just a beginner.

Suzette : Well, thanks to blog advertising that made it possible. Yes, I am trying to make use of my camera, but until today, I still feel I am under utilizing it. Gonna work harder on it.

Congrats on your purchase and welcome to Canon EOS 40D club (if there’s one. haha)

Too be honest, I’m kinda disappointed with the Liveview function. I hoped it would be something like what PnS cameras have whereby autofocus is very much alive (or easy to use).. but nooo.. we have to do some settings, press a few buttons for autofocus in Liveview.. shesshhh…

Other than that, it is a good camera, I would say. I’m loving mine, not sure about you though.

Chong : Now, we are in the same club. ;)

Yes, the Canon’s LiveView isn’t perfect at all, in fact, I would say its amateur-ish, considering that Canon has produced much better LiveView in its P&S cameras. The fact that you can’t do auto focusing using the shutter button isn’t very helpful either. As for the settings, you just need to set one time and then you can on your LiveView by pressing the set button. ;)

Yes, the camera is awesome and definitely made my work much easier nowadays. If I have spent so much and yet no loving it, I must be freaking crazy. LOL.

E Way : Haha! Flash will have to wait as I have some plans first before I proceed with external flash. :D

Yatz : Whats wrong with FZ30 to 40D? :P There’s no point getting a camera with a minor upgrade, right? LOL.

矮子 : Even that being said, I would still have two batteries on hand because I don’t want to have low battery when I forgot to charge or when I am covering a few functions in a day. If one battery can take up to 1600 shots, I would still buy another battery. :P Just my habit. Haha!

    Aprilcherrie : Hehe!

Chong : FF?! Haha! I don’t think so as I wouldn’t want to spend that much on a camera body anymore. 40D should be my last camera. Hehe! Am looking at L lenses, but I have something else to buy before I get those L-series.

hey seems u have used your 40D for quite sometime. I’m currently debating on picking up a DSLR. Between D40 and D450(which was not out at that time u picked urs up), which would u recommend more? and in your own opinion, why?

    hope you can help. thanks

  41. Jason
    August 21st, 2008 13:30
    41

Edwin : There’s no such model D450 by Canon, only 450D. Nikon D40 is not in production anymore, replaced by the D60.

Have you look at the images produced by both cameras? You need to look at it to decide which brand you want to go for. I prefer a warmer picture, hence, Canon is more suitable for me. If you want a kick ass natural colour, go for Nikon.

Of course, I didn’t like the handling of NIkon cameras and my environment is geared more towards Canon.

So yeah, you need to head down to camera shop to look at the picture quality and get a feel of the camera to decide which camera to buy. However, I kinda like the 450D though.

  42. Edwin
    August 21st, 2008 14:39
    42

ops put the D in the wrong position. yea i was talking about the 40D and the 450D by Canon. i’ve tried nikon but apparently i’m a canon fan too. so between these two i’m kinda lost.

i held both and played around a bit, both are acceptable by me, 450 being the lighter one, but the 40 being the more solid feel.

  43. Jason
    August 21st, 2008 14:42
    43

Edwin : It makes a lot of difference when you say D40 and 40D, you know. ;)

40D has better noise control, heavier weight, faster response time, more frames per second, more buttons, more cool looking and definitely more expensive. Haha.

Well, 450D is using the same processor as 40D, so, on paper, it differs by not too much. If you can afford that extra RM1000 to RM1500, go ahead with the 40D.
