Pei San’s Birthday Celebration Night

August 8th, 2007, Jason

Last Saturday, we had our family meeting gathering again, after 8 months since our previous gathering. Yes, we didn’t even manage to gather everyone during Chinese New Year. Weird, right?

Attendees were (in zig-zag format)

Pei San,
Shaly,
Suet Lei,
Yih Tian,
Chun Kit,
Chee Yong,
yours truly (no picture),
Li Sui,
and Pei San’s boy friend, Steven.

Agendas for the #6423 gathering were

1) Pei San’s belated birthday celebration (July 31).
2) Fellowship at a steamboat restaurant at Malim Jaya.
3) Another fellowship at Sunshine Bar, Melaka Raya.

For RM10 per head and 9 people, you will get a plate of vegetables, three types of mushrooms, seafoods like crabs, prawns and sotongs, meats like fish and pork, assorted meats like siew mais, meat balls, dumplings, tau fu, noodles, bee hoons and eggs.

The restaurant is called Tan Catering. The restaurant is situated behind the Malim’s market and food court. Please call me at my phone number for directions.

Like all steamboats restaurant, you can opt for the hot and spicy tomyam or the mild chicken soup or both flavours in one pot. The taste? Nothing to shout about. The only good thing about the steamboat here is cheap and taste not bad. Of course, the variety of dishes available for steamboat-ers or those who come for a hearty dinner. They also served western dishes like chicken chops, steaks, fish and chips, porridge steamboats, and other pan and work dishes, just like any other Chinese restaurants.

After whacking up everything except the plate of noodles, we still ordered a plate of fried rice, fried bee hoon and Hokkien noodles. As usual, I felt as if I didn’t eat anything even after all the food. Blame it on the time I used to peel crabs’ shell for Yih Tian.

We adjourned to Sunshine Bar at Melaka Raya after that. Sunshine Bar is one of the most happening clubs in this half dead historical town. The other bars that I know which are quite happening are Pure Bar, Aloha Dance Club & Bistro and Station 3. I am not pretty sure about others though.

Sunshine Bar is unique on its own the latest club-ers’ favourite because it is situated next to the sea. Yes, the bouncers can actually throw you into the sea. Below the bar is pools of waters, something like a floating bar which I don’t find it amusing special.

Music played by the DJ is rather lame old school. I was wondering why would the DJ played the World Cup theme song by Ricky Martin, which was like 8 years or more ago? I wouldn’t mind if they play Beyonce’s or Destiny Child’s though. Ha! Sound system? Aloha has better ones which can easily almost pump your heart, the weak ones, out.

The beers? A bucket of 5 bottles of small Carlsberg is roughly around RM64.

There, tucked at the far corner of the pub, we celebrated Pei San’s birthday. The usual stuffs lor, sing “Happy Birthday”, make a wish, cut the cake and eat the cake. However, where’s the complimentary Flaming Lamborghini for birthday boys and girls? I thought its a “custom” for most pubs?

Happy Belated Birthday, Pei San!

Practically, that was how we celebrated Pei San’s birthday.

That aside, I wonder why there are so many people love to go clubbing. The music is so loud till you can’t hear clearly what the person sitting next to you talking about. The place is so flooded with people till you can’t even move that freely without landing your hands on someone’s body and yet you said you want to dance. There are many places that sell cheaper beers compare to these places where they practically over charge for everything and anything.

Ignore me, it’s just me. I can’t dance. I don’t like beers. I don’t like loud musics. It’s just me. Clubbing? Neh! I wouldn’t mind tagging along if invited or given a choice, but I definitely won’t suggest it.

Asian Havana Cafe, Again

August 6th, 2007, Jason

It was early afternoon when a good friend rudely awaken me from my deep sleep and asked me out for lunch. No thanks to Sook Ying who made me deprived of sleep, lately. They came all the way down from KL to Malacca to collect their 200 slices (or maybe even more) of Mille Crepe. Tonnes of food places came running into my mind and most of them were non air conditioned, until Asian Havana Cafe popped into my mind.

My last trip to Asian Havana Cafe was 4 months ago and I had a rather so-so experience. Hence, instead of ordering dishes that have weird names and stirred up my curiosity, I decided to play safe and ordered dishes that are familiar to me. You can read the previous review and write up of Asian Havana Cafe by clicking here.

Now that I have written about the cafe before, I will just jump into the food and taste part. I didn’t jot down the names for the food we ordered. I ordered a glass of French soda that comes with lemon and orange zest juice. After stirring them up, it tasted like Sunkist orange juice. No shit! You know, the brand ‘Sunkist’, right? Although we always say “Don’t judge a book by its cover”, I am pretty sure that the beverages served in this cafe are pretty decent and you won’t go wrong with it.

This time, we ordered 3 plates of their specialty, pineapple fried rice. Chunks of pineapples, friend with cili padis and a taste of spiciness, definitely worth a try. There were a few prawns and chicken meat inside as well, topped with some shredded vegetables and served with a big piece of pineapple, which was for decoration purposes only. However, it would be even better if they could serve it steaming hot. It was freshly cooked from the wok, but somehow, the heat didn’t stay long enough. It got cold after halfway into finishing it.

Then, it was this fish fillet flat noodles in thick gravy. I don’t know what was that actually, but judging from it looks, it should taste somewhat like Wat Tan Hor 滑旦河. What surprised me was the amount of mushrooms they put inside. I mean, 3 big pieces of mushrooms, you don’t get that in any cafes, you know.

Up next was Havana Chicken Cordon Bleu, which was deep fried chicken breast meat wrapped with ham and served with macaroni, basil herbs and tomato sauce. I wasn’t sure whether have they improved the dish or not, compared to the last time I had it. I remembered it tasted rather dry.

Last was my fried glass noodles Thai style. I absolutely love this dish, fried glass noodles. Served with a generous amount of fried peanuts and anchovies, and garnished with lots of spring onions! I didn’t eat the vegetables though.

I also ordered a 5 spices Sha Tin chicken chick. It was a deep fried chick dish, served with butter sauce, stir friend vegetables and steamed mashed potatoes. The chicken chick wing is not even the length of my thumb. It was that small yet it tasted quite nice though. It didn’t have a lot of meat for you to chew on, but the meat was tender and fried till golden brown. However, there are lots of room for improvement for their steamed mash potatoes and butter sauce. The butter sauce was just melted butter, nothing else. Perhaps some flavouring could be added into it to make it less butter-ish and oily.

We also didn’t left out their infamous white chocolate cheese cake. Simply delicious.

The bill came up to RM136.02 with 10% discount if you can present an ID that states you as a student of any institution or university. It was rather a heavy lunch for the 6 of us, but I certainly enjoyed my lunch. Certainly, it was a better experience compared to my previous visit. As for my friends, I think they enjoyed it as well, that’s if they didn’t lie to me. They even generously paid my lunch. Heh, thanks guys!

Quad-Happiness At Good World Restaurant

August 1st, 2007, Jason

Whenever there’s good things, events or news that happened among us (Chun Kit, Chee Yong and me), we would definitely share the happiness together and certainly, there’s no better way than to celebrate the news with food.

It was Li Sui’s birthday (July 18), Chee Yong’s birthday (July 19), their 4th anniversary (July 18) and most importantly, Chee Yong has found a job. Quadruple news within two weeks, we aren’t good friends if we don’t celebrate under the expenses of Chee Yong. Ha! After all, our friendships means more than that just few hundred bucks, right? -coughs-

Apart from the four of us, we have Wen Fa (Ah Fatt) joining us too. They drove down from Tampin to Malacca on Friday night while I waited for them at Melaka Raya. I parked my car at the road side and hopped into Ah Yong’s Toyota Innova. It took us quite some time to decide on what to eat and we finally settled for a typical Chinese restaurant along the main road of Melaka Raya. The restaurant’s name is “Good World 好世界”.

We sat down and started ordering our foods. With no budgets in our big boss’s mind, we ordered whatever that pleased our eyes and tummies. Certainly, it was a very good idea as we ordered a total of 7 dishes including prawn 清蒸明虾, duck 枇杷鸭, chicken 原酒蒸鸡, tau fu 砂煲豆腐, cold plate 拼盘, pork 扣肉花包 and dessert. Imagine, 5 of us eating 7 dishes! What a feast!

First up was of course the cold plate. It came with 5 different varieties, including dumplings, meat balls, salads, more meat balls and more meat balls. Honestly, I don’t know what they were but definitely they had meat in it. Ha! It tasted good actually, except for the salad and dumpling which tasted rather bland.

It was followed by the clay pot tau fu which tasted just like any other clay pot tau fu you can have in any other restaurants. They wanted to order hot plate tau fu actually but I protested a little because there wasn’t a dish that contained vegetables. Oh well, we are carnivores anyway.

Pork dish was next. It was served with man taus 馒头 and a plate of pork simmered in tau cu sauce. Just take one piece of the pork, wrapped it with the man taus 馒头, put some sauce and eat it. The man taus 馒头 was a bit cold though.

The soup of the herbal chicken was just at the right level, not too strong yet not too light. However, the chicken they used was extremely skinny and thin. There were barely any meat in it also. Disappointed.

I didn’t like the sweet sour plum sauce used in the duck dish. It wasn’t thick and sweet enough for my liking. However, the duck was very crispy but like the chicken, it was a malnutrition duck. Thin and bone-y. However, it has more meat than the chicken though.

The last dish was none other than the steamed prawns. Under the prawns was a layer of steamed eggs, garnished with spring onions and ginger. The prawns were huge and was still quite fresh. Not very juicy but still firm.

The table sitting not too far from us were looking at our table, wondering how many dishes we had ordered. Each time the waiter brought a dish to our table, they would look at our table and gossip a little. The look on their face was amusing. Ha! We had our desserts, longan with sea coconuts. Just the right dish to end our 7-course meal. We wanted to add in peach too but didn’t manage to as Ah Kit stopped me from doing so.

The bill?

Cold plate (RM40) + prawns (RM40) + pork (RM18) + tau fu (RM12) + duck (RM20) + chicken (RM18) + desserts (RM16) + rice (RM5.60) + peanuts (RM2) + tea (RM2) + wet towels (RM2) + 5% government tax (RM8.80) = RM184.40.

Cheap? I don’t know but sure it was one heck of a dinner for the five of us! Most importantly, it was free! And just when you thought it would be quite some time before we eat like gluttons again after our Sakae Sushi outing.

We then proceeded to Xuan Cafe for another round of drinking session, not beers but green tea. -sweat-
