Tanjung Sepat’s Bah Kut Teh
Last Sunday, I joined my family and other friends of families to a small fishing village called Tanjung Sepat. It was a family day trip thing organized by the Rotary Club of Tampin. With a bunch of makan kakis in the club, every where they go, food is always on the priority.
Tanjung Sepat is famous for many things like seafood Bah Kut Teh, seafood dinner, mei cai rou bao 梅菜肉包, fried tapioca / crackers and etc. Hence, our first meal was none other than the famous Bah Kut Teh which were featured by many magazines and TV shows like Astro AEC”s “Taste With Jason 阿贤人情味“. It was even featured once by Ah Hoong 师奶杀手阿鸿. To top it off, it was rated as one of the top 20’s Bah Kut Teh in Malaysia, according to Guang Ming Daily.

With so many recommendations from TV shows, magazines, chefs and celebrities, one shouldn’t miss out, right?

The shop is nothing but a simple wooden shop. No fancy decoration, no air conditioner, no comfortable table and chairs and definitely no top class service. Everything is down right simple and you can even see the cook prepare your Bah Kut Teh.

As we have pre-ordered previously, our dishes were served almost immediately. I snapped a few pictures of the earlier dishes before I started eating. I don’t have the mood to write and describe the dishes. Hopefully, the pictures would be sufficient enough for you.

Due to miscommunication, the seafood Bah Kut Teh wasn’t in our menu but we were given a pot of bean curd skin in Bah Kut Teh soup and another pot of Bah Kut Teh. My first spoon was definitely their Bah Kut Teh as that’s what they are famous for. However, it was nothing but disappointment.
The soup tasted like those pre-packed Bah Kut Teh that you can get from your supermarket. It tasted rather plain and certainly didn’t have the unique pork bone’s taste, as if it was boiled for a short time. In Chinese, 不够火候 / 入味 (The soup wasn’t boil long enough to absorb the taste.). Kai Hong recommended’s Bah Kut Teh tasted far better than theirs. As for other dishes, it wasn’t even up to the “nothing-to-shout-about” level. In fact, it was below average. Their bean curd skin? Not even 1/10 of the one Boss Stewie recommended’s Bah Kut Teh.
Unless you prefer those clear and light flavoured Bah Kut Teh, else, avoid this.
My conclusion : If their Bah Kut Teh is rated as the country’s top 20 Bah Kut Teh and recommended by so many people, then, many other Bah Kut Teh stalls are waiting to be discovered or widely publicized by the media. It’s definitely not worth the money, petrol and time spent to travel all the way to Tanjung Sepat to try it.
Try at your own risk.

When we were there was quite late, maybe not enough for 78 of us, they tend to add more water and affect the taste. I would still give them a chance and we didn’t even try the seafood bak kut teh. Don’t jump to the conclusion so fast!

Usually hor.. i donch really care about those that got recommended.. on tv.. or newspaper.. because they are just over-rated in my humble opinion..!
I prefer those recommended by food bloggers.. ;)

Just a matter of preference. Some people like it that way (the bakuteh soup), some people dont.
You should try Kepong bakuteh.

Oh bah kut teh is good food! Always love it. But sometimes it’s very disappointing to have watery bakuteh soup. Not in Klang though. The soup is nice and thick. All that lard has dissolved with the herbs and spices, fat never tasted so good! Yumm.
Argh! Now I feel like driving all the way to Klang!

I am not a bakuteh fans, but somehow I only like the bakuteh my friend brought me to in Muar. The soup, meat, fats, aroma, thickness is just up to my liking!
and most of the shops when highly rated by the media, their standard tends to drop, at the same time, the price will go up. nuisance!

i once tried a BKT in Serdang and personally i feel that their soup was quite nice…

Haha…. nice review. I guess restaurateurs and other stores everywhere should be cautious - cos bloggers may be lurking and write about their shortcomings. If my restaurant serves sub-standard food… the last customer I’d want to receive is a blogger. Hahah..

When I saw the title.. I thought wah.. good.. can have seafood bak kut teh… b’cos I’d been trying to look for halal bakkuteh or chikuteh.

Im no bak kut teh fan, but i gotta agree, if the soup is plainly thin, something is wrong.
Though bak kut teh is not my favourite, i would give anything to have a bowl now !! Its amazing how being away can make you crave for things you take for granted previously.

Jamie : If they really add water, even worse. We already pre-booked and they shouldn’t even over sell in the first place. Besides, even if they didn’t add water, I doubt it will taste any better.
Mama Bok : Yes, especially recommended by me, right? :P
Endroo G : Yes, taste is something very subjective and nobody is right. I will, some day.
Agust : They say any Bah Kut Teh shop in Klang has a certain standard, which I believe is rather true since Bah Kut Teh’s origin is believed to be from Klang. The other day I went there for lunch, a blogger’s parents brought me there.
Yung . : You should try other’s Bah Kut Teh, maybe they taste even better. Agree with what you say in the second part. I hate them.
Hung Wei : Is it? I never know there’s a popular Bah Kut Teh there. Will check it out one day.
Narrowband : Haha! Hopefully the boss or the boss’s children will read my blog and do something about their food. They should really buckle up to live up to their name and fame.
Zara’s Mama : I think their seafood also tasted so-so only. Nothing to shout about. Not to mention, the crabs I ate very rather small and no meat. Haha! Bah Kut Teh must eat with pork ler. :P
Robin : Haha! Maybe you should buy those pre-packed Bah Kut Teh and bring it back to Aussie the next time you come back.
Beng Beng : Haha! Just pulling your legs, am cool with it. My name popped up? Got heart to meet or because talking bad things about me?
Blueapple : Heh. Thank you.
