BBQ Pork Rice In Malacca

A lot of people may have heard about the midnight char siew rice in Malacca. The only shop that starts their business from 12 midnight until 2 o’clock in the morning, selling nothing but char siew rice. It is the shop opposite Capitol Satay Celup. Well, if any Malaccans bring you there to try their char siew rice, scold them for bringing you there.

1) Overrated.
2) Everything except their char siew rice taste like craps.
3) At least two times more expensive than other char siew rice shops in Malacca.
4) There are a handful of stalls that sell equally or even better char siew than them.

Ignore the typo.

Don’t say I didn’t warn you. Maybe I should launch a boycott midnight char siew rice shop campaign!

That aside, you should try this char siew rice in Batu Berendam, Malacca instead. It’s not in the town center but rather outside the town. Find your way to Siemens or National Semiconductor and you are on the right route to the shop. After passing by Siemens or National Semiconductor, drive straight until you see a big T-junction and a Perodua center (corner lot) at one corner. Turn towards the Perodua center and go straight until you see Chuen How Restaurant on your left.

Depending on the time you go, there will definitely be a queue outside the shop. Hence, the first thing you come down from your car is to queue, not find a table or seat. Regardless of you dining in or taking away, you need to queue up just like every other people who patronizes the shop. There are definitely more than enough seats for you, so don’t worry. Queue up first!

As you queue up and get closer to the char siew, prepare yourself for an eye feasting session. As soon as you see the boss opposite you / on the opposite side of the mirror, get yourself ready to drown in your own drool.

When you are standing in front of the boss, tell him what you want for your side dishes. There are many variates for you to coose from, such as sweet and sour pork, asam pedas fish, assorted vegetables like bean sprouts, long beans, cabbages, fried eggs, hard boiled eggs, potatoes, bean curds, luncheon meats, sausages and of course, char siew. So, choose your side dishes while you are queuing up in front of the stall, not when you are in front of the boss. Swiftly, he will prepare your plate of rice and you proceed to choose your own sauce, the curry sauce or sweet sauce.

My plate of rice cost me RM5, inclusive of added rice, added char siew, potatoes and long beans.

Now, our focus is on the pork. BBQ-ed to perfection and a little burnt at the corner to give you the crunchy taste and texture. Marinated overnight with various herbs and spices before being charcoal grilled and spread with honey to give the sweetness. The right ratio of lean meat and fat to give you that satisfaction that will make you come back for more, and more, and more.

I am more of a siu yok rather than char siew fan, but give me their char siew anytime and I will still whack it all down in a blink of an eye.

Malaccans love their char siew very much, so much that there’s no food court in Malacca would dare to operate without a stall selling char siew rice. On top of that, you can basically get char siew at almost every area in Malacca town and outside Malacca town. I have yet to introduce the Bunga Raya Lane’s char siew too!

So, why patronize the overrated midnight char siew rice shop?

Last time this stall was selling in their porch in front of their house near the Big Long Kang along Batu Berendam road. Char Siew no doubt very nice but I think it’s a bit too sweet. You can notice the layer of “candle wax” on top of your char siew. Don’t like going there because too many people though…

Yeah Bunga Raya Char Siew also nice! Introduce!

    Hao : Oh yeah! :D

Shinky : Yes, this is the same one. They have earned enough to buy a shop for themselves now. ;) Sweet? Haha! I think its just taste fine to me but maybe its a little too sweet for you. No time to go Bunga Raya’s, damn difficult to find parking there during lunch hour.

Boss Lepton : Ha! I know you heard about the midnight char siew but you can forget about that because I, dfeinitely, will not bring you there. :P Black? The sweet type that comes in thick black sauce? My mum cooks that very often too!

VHanded : I find 800’s char siew not nice one, doesn’t taste really that good also.

Tan Kiasu : Haha! Now you have another reason to come to Malacca again! ;)

    双喜妈妈 : 十人分?你要每一餐都吃叉烧啊?小心双喜爸爸拿锅铲丢你哦!:P

Che-Cheh : Want to try some?

Jason Phoon : Haha! This char siew, you must try! They also got sell siew yok, but their char siew is the best!

Candy Gan : You come Malacca, call me, I bring you go. :P

湘绣蜻蜓 : Haha! No need to visit them at all, trust me! :D Yes, go and try and let me know what you think. Is it? I didn’t know that leh!

Simmy : Malacca not that bad until midnight got no food ler. Heh! You can find food almost 24/7.

Anthraxxxx : Oh yeah! Let’s boycott that shop! Farking blood suckers, they are.

Hao : VHanded, see. Told you 800’s char shao siew yok also tasted like craps. :P

Jamie : Ask papa bring you go! :D
