Roll ‘Em, Pohpiah Of Malacca!

I have featured the back alley stall and the fried oyster of Jalan Bunga Raya, but then, Jalan Bunga Raya has much more to offer other than the two local delicacy food. Today’s subject’s is Jalan Bunga Raya’s “Pohpiah” stall, which is situated right in front of Madam’s King Emporium. Madam’s King Emporium is one of the biggest landmark along Jalan Bunga Raya, you have to be blind to miss it.

This stall, or rather family, has been selling pohpiah for at least 2 generations. It started out with the father (or maybe grandfather) managing the stall and it was handed down and still operates even until today.

In a stainless steel movable stall, business will start around 7.30PM or 8PM and usually, by 10PM or 10.30PM, the stall is closed. I have seen the stall operating on weekdays, but not sure about weekends though. Despite that 2 to 3 hours of operating hours, the amount of pohpiah he could sell in that period could easily exceed 100 or even 200. The numbers of people waiting around his stall can be as little as 4 to 5 people or more than 10, depending on when you visit the stall and the waiting time will be roughly 10 to 15 minutes.

Ingredients used are the norms, sweet sauce, chili paste, bean sprouts, eggs, minced “taufu” and of course turnips and lards.

Do I still have to write how he prepares the pohpiah? No need gua.

He would roll 15 to 20 pohpiahs at 1 go, and then only start packing it away. So, be patient.

The turnips are sweet and the taste will linger around your taste buds for a short while after you finish eating it. The pohpiah is not too wet or dry, just nice for its size, with juice oozing out when you chew on the turnips. The skin, I suspect, is home made as well.

It was once said that the pohpiah used to have so many big chunks of pork lards in it until it would freak certain people out and was soaked in oil as if it was like eating a crunchy pohpiah. -sweat- I think they have stop doing that but pork lard’s oil is still an essential or the essence of the pohpiah.

Pohpiah, anyone?

By the way, Jeremy’s mom makes one of the best pohpiahs. She will prepare a huge variety of extra ingredients like prawns, mushrooms, super yummy chilies, long beans and if not mistaken, “char siew”! -drools-

Jeremy, ask your mum when, can ah?

Hey! Our favourite popiah stall!! The best!!! I just had them a week ago.

Yes, they are open on weekends, 2pm onwards till 4pm I think. And prepare to wait for at least half and hour before u get ur popiah. Rm2 for small, RM2.50 for big. My advice, go for small.

I wonder whether the father is still around.

    Michelleg : Sure. Haha!

Boss Stewie : No, Penang’s food are overrated.

Papi : Ah, you were in Malacca last week! Haha! They start from 2PM? Haha, I never know they start their business so early, I always think they start during late evening one you know. And I don’t think they have big / small pohpiah ler. :D

Surfnux : Hmm, I am not sure already if its like that. I am going to check it out to verify. Haha. By the way, where’s Jalan Kubu? Sounds very familiar though. Haha. I never remember road names, I only remember them by landmarks or food stalls around them. :P
