Chocolate Fondue At Sweet Sensation Cafe

November 21st, 2006, Jason

I drove past this restaurant quite a number of times and whenever I look into the shop, there’s nobody inside. If it’s a cafe, why there weren’t any singers inside? If it’s a restaurant, is the food so bad that 8 out of 10 times, there is no customer inside? Well, I don’t have any idea what the shop is selling and nobody informs me about its’ specialty until someone sent me a link from a Chinese forum stating that this cafe sells something called chocolate fondue.

Hence, I decided to try it out since I was in town for work the other day.

Minimum interior design. Ambiance is so-so. A little bit pack and noisy if there are more customers. Usually, I don’t really give a hoot about the shop’s appearance but this shop is going to need some reminder. For a shop of that size, there’s only 1 air conditioner. -sweat- The air conditioner wasn’t really working too, making the whole shop kind of stuffy and hot. Not to mention, smoking is allowed and makes the already stuffy shop even stuffier.

Since I went to work in Equatorial Hotel and had an 8 course meal dinner before this, I decided to order the chocolate fondue and a glass of soya bean with glass jelly. My friend ordered a glass of orange juice. The drinks tasted a little plain and not cold enough for my liking but it’s still OK.

The chocolate steamboat consisted of a plate of assorted fruits such as watermelons, honeydews, canned pineapples, kiwis and bananas.

A small bowl of hugely chopped peanuts.

3 scoops of ice cream.

And a cute little monster to accompany you while you dine in.

Nolah, it’s a small little bowl filled with sweet and thick cooking chocolate with a small fire underneath to keep it warm.

A set of chocolate fundae, cost RM10.80.

No need to teach you how to eat gua.

Overall, it tasted quite good. My friend and I enjoyed the supper a lot, something simple, light and yet sinful. I think they used cooking chocolate, hence, the sweetness is just nice. However, there are lots of places to improve.

1) Fix at least 2 or more air conditioners.
Freaking warm and stuffy inside.

2) Be more generous with the chocolate sauce.
Mana cukup?

3) Chop the peanuts a few more times.
The peanuts are just too big lah!

4) Can we have more varieties of fruits or let us select our own combinations?
I am not fond of banana and pineapple.

Overall, its worth visiting. Not to mention, they are the ONLY cafe that serves chocolate fondue in Malacca. It’s kind of pathetic if you are to compare with KL’s, but then, it’s Malacca. You can get much better chocolate fondue in KL like Chocz at KLCC or at Haagen Daaz, according to Purplerose.

If they want me to sit longer, they need to fix the new air conditioner first. Might be a nice place to hang out since there were quite a lot of people in the cafe after 10PM. The price is overall reasonable, and fared much better than the overrated Wingz Cafe or Xuan Cafe. However, I still need the air conditioner.

So, when do you (Ah Yong) want to bring your wife here? You are the one who asked me to check it out.

Miscellaneous Stuffs

November 19th, 2006, Jason

Some little updates since I don’t have a concrete topic / event to blog about lately.

Remember the post “Shouldn’t It Be XXL?“, which D’ Jungle People gave me a L-size T-shirt as a token of appreciation for my contribution of all the photos I have for Spirit Of Penang?

I received another parcel from D’ Jungle people today. Inside the parcel was a T-shirt, with the same design, colours but different size and this time, it’s XXL. -grins-

Even though it’s XXL, it fits into me JUST nice. -lol- As for the smaller size T-shirt, I will just keep it or give it to my sister.

Thanks again, Emily.

Even with the electric mosquito bat (电蚊拍), the amount of mosquito flying into my room and suck me my blood while I am asleep is getting more and more. As if, it’s just a matter of time before I get Aedes. -sweat-

-zaps another mosquito-

-zaps another mosquito-

-zaps another mosquito-

Electro-crucify these bastards always give me a high feeling, with the smell of burnt stuff lingering in my room for 2 seconds as a sign of victory.

I don’t know have you noticed or not (At least Boss Stewie and Mumsgather did.), I had signed up for the ReviewMe. Well, if its going to give out money for written reviews, I might as well give it a try since writing / blogging is something that I enjoy doing.

Now, since I don’t want to bore my readers out for all the sponsored posts, I am writing down some notes for myself.

1) My blog is still about me, myself and I; and of course, my friends and family.

2) Side income from my blog will be my secondary objective.

3) I won’t be pinging PPS for the sponsored posts.

Basically, that’s it.

I can only cross my fingers that there will be assignments coming in as soon as possible; instead of just a one-post-then-die-off thing.

Ray7 (one of my readers) wanted me to advertise his photo blog. Well, I wouldn’t say it’s a blog since he’s hosting his pictures on Multiply and there are no form of text at all.

I am just doing a favour, that’s all.

Siti Nurhaliza & Fish Leong

November 17th, 2006, Jason

My favourites, recently.

Bukan Cinta Biasa

Begitu banyak cerita
Ada suka ada duka
Cinta yang ingin ku tulis
Bukanlah cinta biasa

Dua keyakinan beza
Masalah pun tak sama
Ku tak ingin dia ragu
Mengapa mereka selalu bertanya

Cintaku bukan di atas kertas
Cintaku getaran yang sama
Tak perlu dipaksa
Tak perlu dicari
Kerna ku yakin ada jawabnya
Oh~

Andai ku bisa merubah semua
Hingga tiada orang terluka
Tapi tak mungkin
Ku tak berdaya
Hanya yakin menunggu jawabnya

Janji terikat setia
Masa merubah segala
Mungkin dia kan berlalu
Ku tak mahu mereka tertawa

Diriku hanya insan biasa
Miliki naluri yang sama
Tak ingin berpaling
Tak ingin berganti
Jiwa ku sering saja berkata

Andai ku mampu ulang semula
Ku pasti tiada yang curiga
Kasihkan hadir tiada terduga
Hanya yakin menunggu jawapan

Don’t you feel more lively and cheerful after listening to the song? At least, I do.

Restaurant Saravanna’s Banana Leaf Rice

November 15th, 2006, Jason

It’s easy to find banana leaf rice during day time / lunch hour, but to find the same thing during evening / night time is going to take some effort and asking around. One day, Jerry brought me to this restaurant at Bukit Baru that serves banana leaf rice all day long until 11PM.

This restaurant, called Restaurant Saravanna is situated right opposite Bukit Baru’s Jiki’s food court (next to the Maxis specialized store), and according to Jerry, they are quite popular for the huge servings and banana leaf rice.

I sat down and ordered for a glass of iced water. I always find it fascinating when an Indian restaurant serves their drinks in stainless steel cups. I love the coldness whenever I hold the cup and the water droplets at the side of the cup is so “pretty”. For starters, Jerry ordered 5 pieces of “vade” which ended up us bringing back home. Yummy, but it did not blend well with my rice. -rolls eyes-

Stupid Jerry decided to boycott me and ordered a plate of “Maggi Goreng Ayam”. For the price of RM4.00, he got himself almost 2 packets of noodles and a handful of chicken meat. During our last visit, they gave Jerry a big chunk of chicken breast meat. Compare to those mamak shops in Bukit Beruang that charge the same price, they are like 1.5 times more generous with their ingredients. Even the plates / pizza pans they used are 2 times larger than other mamak shops!

I had banana leaf rice instead. 2 pieces of crunchy “papadam” (Is it the correct spelling?), which I later ordered another 2 pieces for RM0.50. A spoonful of cucumbers, onions and pineapple in coconut milk. Maybe it’s not coconut milk also.

A spoonful of potatoes and long beans in dried curry sauce and stir fried cabbage each.

A plate of dried chilies chicken and mutton rendang. The chicken was slightly dry, but the unlimited supply of chicken curry solved the issue. They chopped the mutton into small bite size but the meat weren’t superbly tender though, just nice. Both dishes weren’t spicy, kind of disappointment since I love spicy food a lot. The dishes came slightly cold but they heated it up with the microwave before serving.

I tried to change my picture style a little bit by going slightly macro focus in, and the picture ended so not appetizing. I think I will stick with my own style instead.

A bucket of chicken / mutton / fish curry for you to flood your rice.

All these for RM7.50. In fact, they should charged me RM15 for all the double servings. -lol- I had 2 servings of white rice, 2 servings of potatoes and long beans, 3 servings of cucumbers and onions, 4 pieces of “papadam” and 8 scoops of curry mutton. -bbbuuuurrrrrpppppp-

There’s a little knowledge whenever you have banana leaf rice. After you finish your meal, you should fold the banana leaf towards you, not outwards. If you fold the banana leaf towards you, it means the food is nice, you like it and you “accept” it. But if you fold it outwards, it means the food is bad and you are “giving” it back to the person / host. Is it true? I am not sure, but no harm following, right? After all, it does make sense.

Jerry ended his meal with another stick of ciggy.

As for me, I ordered a glass of “teh tarik”. Ha!

Melaka Raya’s Porridge House

November 13th, 2006, Jason

It was 1 o’clock in the morning when Allison, Debbie and I had an impromptu supper after chatting on IM about the foods around in Malacca. Allison suggested Melaka Raya’s Porridge House and I agreed since the shop was closed during my previous two trips.

Porridge House, situated somewhere right in the middle of various night clubs / karaoke lounge in Melaka Raya. Their specialty is of course the huge variety of porridges available, the basics fried dishes (”Zhu Chao” / 煮炒) and side dishes 下酒小菜. I think you actually can have a decent meal / supper in the small restaurant. The shop opens until late night to cater the needs of those clubbers who come out from discos / pubs after 2AM. Hence, you get to ogle at some hot chicks / handsome guys every now and then.

There are more than 10 types of porridges, including fish, prawns, chicken, pork, double eggs and a few more that I can’t remember. You can even have mix and match porridge, for a different price of course. For 1 serving of porridge is about RM4, 2 servings for RM6 and 3 and above for RM8. However, price varies with different ingredients. All porridges are served in clay pots. I don’t know why, porridges that are cooked / served in clay pots tastes better. Maybe the clay pot has absorbed all the porridges’ tastes / essence after cooking in it again and again and again.

I ordered a bowl of chicken + pork + egg + salted egg porridge that caused me RM8. Should have added prawns as well. Heh, talk about greediness. The porridge wasn’t too thick or too watery (潮洲式), just nice, topped with a spoonful of fried onions/garlics and a little bit of parsley. It tasted quite good, with generous amounts of ingredients too. They gave me a small bowl to eat with, but half way through, I was helping myself directly from the pot. Allison and Debbie didn’t eat because they had supper a while ago before meeting me.

We ordered a plate of 菜胆 (Anyone knows what is it called in English?), cooked in 腐乳 (Anyone knows what is it called in English? Fermented Tau Fu?). When you are doing your grocery shopping, you see this bottle of small little fermented and salty “tau fu” and it goes well with porridge, even plain porridge. Its delicious, really! Think you can try cooking at home yourself too.

The 腐乳 gravy.

They also ordered a bowl of seaweed soup which tasted so-so only. There were a little bit of prawns, mushrooms, chicken meat and fish cake. My mum could cook 10 times better than theirs.

The bill came up to RM25.30 for a plate of century egg (RM1.50), vegetable (RM6.00), porridge (RM8.00), soup (RM4.00) and drinks (RM5.80). Not very expensive, and the fact that its not easy to find a decent shop that serves good porridge especially during midnight, I will definitely come back for more.
