Earn More To Spend More?
Note : I’m still not comfortable expressing my inner thoughts in my blog when my parents / family / relatives are reading my blog. Hence, the password protected post.
If I tell you that I wasn’t excited as I should be when I bought my first digital camera last month, would you believe me?
6 months ago, I blogged about my 2006 wish list that consisted of a Nokia N70 mobile phone (RM1600), a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX9 (RM1600), a Logitech MX610 Laser Cordless Mouse (RM210) and a holiday trip with 2 of my best friends (RM400). Initially, it was a plan that would take me 2 years, considering the time I take to save and work for the money. After all, RM3810 was not a small amount of money for a student with no income.
Early March, I bought my Nokia N70.
Early April, Ah Nee gave me the Logitech MX610 Laser Cordless Mouse as my birthday present.
Early May, my best friends and I had a sea food trip at Tanjung Harapan.
Late July, I didn’t manage to buy my Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX9. Instead, I upgraded it to Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ30, which cost me a whopping RM2480.
Mission accomplished. I should be happy that a 2 years plan was completed in just 6 months time, right? The truth is I don’t feel any excitement. I don’t feel any self satisfaction. I don’t feel proud about my achievement (If you allow me to call it “achievement”.).
“Is it right?”
“Is this what I really want, for myself?”
“Is it worth the money to buy these things?”
“Although I earned the money with my own effort, is it right to spend it like this?”
These are the questions that I have been asking myself since I bought the camera. I am not trying to show off, but the money that I am earning from my part time job is 150% - 200% more than my monthly allowance.
The way I earned my money now is totally different from what I did to earn that few bucks. Looking back at my part time jobs resume, most of the jobs required me to stand for long hours, work under the hot sun, sweat a lot, persuade people, long working hours and etc. Now, I just have to go there for 1 to 2 hours, ask a few people some questions, write the story at home and send it out. Not only that, I get free gifts like mugs, bags, shirts, tickets and etc. from the organizers. If I am lucky, free food at hotels or better still, being exposed to things that normal people doesn’t have the chance to. It’s so different. It’s an eye opener. It’s a new experience. It’s easy. It’s simple. Most importantly, I enjoy the work.
Easy work with lots of money, what can I ask for. Now, I can buy things that cost RM20 without thinking twice. I can save my money for bigger and better stuffs. I can start considering to dine in posh restaurant. I can buy more clothes. I feel less painful (for my wallet) each time after I come back from KL. I can buy more useless stuffs. I can do more things. I can do this, I can do that, I can do these, I can do those.
My monthly allowance is barely enough for me to survive for 1 whole month, but not anymore. Things are about to change. However, it is the transition between these 2 lifestyles that I cannot cope / adapt myself to it yet.
I wanted to buy more clothes for my pathetic 4 t-shirts only wardobe.
I wanted to buy a CD / MP3 player, with touch screen somemore, for my car.
I wanted to buy a new sport shoes, a branded one.
I wanted to buy an Ipod.
I wanted to go for a holiday, better still if it’s outside Malaysia.
I wanted to…
I never think of getting any of the things I mentioned above before this. I am getting greedier. I am not easily satisfied anymore. I want more, more and more; regradless whether is it necessary to me or not.
I am afraid I will forget the phrase “money doesn’t grow on trees”. I am afraid I will forget the pain, hardwork and hardship that I had gone through to buy my stuffs. Each time I see my friends (who are far more richer than I am) spending like no tomorrow or buying clothes when they have enough clothes for 1 whole African tribe, I feel sad. Will I become one of them? Will I still think wisely and weigh the pros and cons before I buy something?
Perhaps I am starting to lose my point or getting lost in my own post. After all, I am not good in expressing myself. However, I do hope you get what I am trying to say here.
Well, hopefully I can adapt myself to the changes, in a good way. In a good way as in, I am still what I am now (in terms of spending) and yet, a change for a better lifestyle. Hence, always remind / scold me when I ask you whether I should buy something.
Earn more to spend more?
I prefer to earn more and yet spend lesser / wiser.

nah its perfectly alrite to splurge urself for the first few pay … but like you said money dont grow on trees and we always spend more than we earn … its wise to think twice before spending on anything or buying anything …
when i get my pay i tend to spend without thinking ….100 bucks meal, cincai la, 200 bucks for a bag, cincai la … but towards the mid of the month, sei lo … everything i spend also count to the very dime wan …
u need a few weeks to earn 1k, but to spend 1k - its the blink of an eye … just say ok ..
August 11th, 2006 00:40

Earl Ku : Yeah, I am like you. Early of the month spending like price is not a problem/factor at all, but middle/end of the month, only I feel the pain. So, now I really have to watch out how I spend my money and where it goes. Sighs. Earn sikit also susah, earn banyak also susah.
MengZ : Hopefully I can save the money instead of spending it away on useless stuffs. Sometimes, even if its your own money, you don’t feel right buying it one. :) Depends lah, really depends.
Twinsmom : You got a point. True enough, I work hard to buy the things I want, hence, not letting go any chance to earn the cash. Used to be my motivation. Maybe I should come up with a better and more hebat wish list to motivate myself. Hehe. Yeah, hopefully I will learn how to manage my finance. I sucks in handling money. Really.
As for your mille crepe, ha, can, when I go up KL again. :P

don’t worry..money is meant to be spent. Afterall, we can’t bring our money and our belongings to the grave. Only remember, save enough for rainy days. Save enough for our old age. Save enough for the unexpected. And invest what you have to make even more money!! Other than that, spend like you’ve never spent before!! hahaha
God bless u, didi!! ngek ngek ngek

yeah i have obsession in buying clothesss prolly should not be liddat :) let’s spend wisely!
August 11th, 2006 07:05
at your age, it’s easy to get carried away lah, coz you have no commitment like car or house yet. Don’t worry about it lah, it’s quite normal. At a certain point, you will get tired of changing phones, cameras or gadgets and start thinking about your future. Just let things proceed the natural way lor :P
p/s: if you are too afraid of spending too much, you should start thinking about making some comitted payments like insurance or other invesments :)

Jason, I know y u dun feel satisfied with ur ‘achievement’. Bcoz wen u plan to buy those stuff, its based on ur allowance (which takes u 2 yr 2achieve, with lots of saving, skipping meal, movies, etc). But then now, u got extra income which make u achieve it faster with suffering. Thus the excitment is less..
Buying new & expensive stuff is not showing off, but its a method to pamper urself after ‘work under the hot sun’, ‘running around’.
Yes, u can buy this and that with jus snap of ur finger (when u got lots of news cover) but then as egghead said, when u reach a point, u’ll feel ‘upgrading’ urself is bored.
Better save up some money or make committed payment for ur own future and ur partner future.
August 11th, 2006 09:16
wah.. all also long comment…
jason, u just moved to the next stage, congrats. Be proud when spending your own money~ :p
if cant think of anywhere else to spend your money, come chia me eat BKT..
August 11th, 2006 09:57
Make hay while the sun shines, Jason. U don’t get this kind of opportunities all the time in life..But do think twice before u spend ok, even though u have the full right on the money u earn. :)

有钱能使鬼推磨,钱真得能让人作怪!不过你还有怀疑的心态,证明还没陷入很深。希望你还能保住这种心态吧!
我认为自己的血汗钱是应该花的,只是要花的物有所值。

Usually when it comes to managing money, it’s all about allocating the right amount of money to each expense of yours. It doesn’t matter whether your income is $200 or $10000.
Let’s say, after a well-thought out estimation, food will cost $X, petrol = $Y, entertainment = $Z, savings = $A… calculate the percentage of each expense in relation to your income. Say food will take up 40%, petrol 20% etc. So as your income amass, so does the amout of money in accordance to the percentage. That means, the more you earn, the more you get to indulge in say, FOOD!!
Isn’t that a wonderful thing? =D
But you’ve already come a long way; just by recognizing this weekness of yours before it even crops up. Btw, if you have leftover cash, you can always make a donation. To me, no less. Heh. =P
Love,
Your financial advisor

人不花费,妄少年啰。。有钱吾怕洗。。at your age now..no need to save many $$..10% enough liao lor..for emergency use only…
work so hard without spending…没什么人生乐趣的喔..
August 11th, 2006 11:38
Isn’t it a blessing that you have come to “realize” certain things BEFORE it is too late? If that is your real resolution, to earn more but to spend wisely, I wish you all the best =)
August 11th, 2006 12:28
Jason, I think whatever income, be it rm1,600 or rm10,000
I think once you have them in hand, first thing is to set aside 20%
to a special accounts or fund. Which will only be accessible in
1 year or 2 years time.
Or Fixed Deposite also good idea, this will help to to save the basic
20% of money.
The rest of 80%, you can use it, you can spend it or you can do
anything that you want without feeling uneasy with it.
Again, as time goes by, you will slowly understand the importance
of having an account which is for emergency use only.
Could be used for your house downpayment, car downpayment,
medical bill, investment for your first pot of gold etc.
Trust me, start the 20% set aside rule now, 2 years or 3 years
later you will be so proud of yourself, and I know I would :)
August 11th, 2006 14:49
Kai Hong … Dont teach him to spend like that lah. Jason, it’s normal for you to feel like that … as twinsmum said, whatever you got in your hand, think … u should be glad and appreciate the value of those gadgets u have spent … in terms of the striving and for what your think its worth getting for.
But as thing goes by … u will notice, the things that you want shall gets bigger and bigger ! These are just the beginning. You have to overcome it … if not … You just have to stay simple.
August 11th, 2006 14:51
Jason,
my hubby always say that i can survive with Rm200, during University, but i still complain not enuf money to spend when i get more than 3K a month..because when u earn more, you may spend more for better cars, kids, nicer cloths…but remember, must keep aside some money as saving, for ur future. coz you need to get marry, need to have kids, need to buy house…
thats why we now spends for insurance, jj’s insurance, investment for future too..
i agreed with kai hong..
August 11th, 2006 15:06
Actually u should feel proud of ur achievements. U did the rite thing by spending what u needed and what I considered was dat u had spent wisely compared to some youngsters ur age who still don’t know how to value the money they’ve earned. Just go step by step.
Do agree with what Egghead mentioned, “u could start thinking about making some committed payments like insurance or other invesments”. Dat would be a good start.
August 11th, 2006 16:33

Ah it’s dam blardy good to ponder… especially towards our own self. And as we grow older (and wiser!) we need to always revise and review our own self to become better. Being able to earn more than you need to spend (for need not desire though…) is also a dam blardy good thing. But no matter how good the money is they still come with work and effort, be it easy or otherwise. It’s dam blardy good to reward yourself, and at the same time, it’s gonna be heavenly good too if you could put some from ur earnings for ur future, ie stable investment insurance savings etc etc. A man who can earn, spend, and save is great. But these won’t work without PLAN. So no need to corner urself too much with that thoughts. Always be true to yourself and your heart. Have conversation with yourself, and you’ll find things better. Ah… I mumble too much here… heh. Mmm btw, how to earn good money like you in those pt job??? I’m dam blardy joblesssssssss… :’(

Acquiescence : I know money is meant to be spent, but I want to know how to spend wisely and whether is it correct to spend like this or for that stuff. Thanks. I should start saving my money too.
Mun Kit : Ok, you don’t buy those sissy clothes anymore too. LOL.
Egghead : Even if when I am tired of upgrading my gadgets and etc, I won’t get tired of spending money on food. LOL. That is another problem that I should be worried about too. :P Investment? Few hundred bucks can invest what woh?
Young Brat : Yeah yeah, thats the thing. The excitement is not there anymore. Sighs. It used to be pampering, but now its more like buying for the sake of buying. Thats why and how I feel so now. Yeah, save them hor.
Cely : Hehe. I chia you BKT, you chia me eat crabs. Deal? :P
JiNz : Yeah, now it is an extra income, but not anymore when I am working it as a full timer. Hmm… I will, remind me when you see me spending recklessly.
Jesslyn : Money has always been my biggest enemy/issue. So, still learning how to deal with it.
Emily T : Since when you are my financial advisor? You sounds like my wife who have full control over the husband (me)’s finance. Hmmm… You got a point, totally and I didn’t think of that. Allocation. Sweet. I can spend on you after you treat me at TGIF. HAHAHAH!
Msau : Haha, that means I can spend like nobody’s business and just save that 10% for emergency? :P
Pelf : Thank you, hopefully I will be able to keep the resolution with me.
Kai Hong : 20% of RM500, macam very sikit hor? Hmm… There is a type of bank account where you can only deposit money and cannot withdraw one, right? Maybe I should open an account like that.
Mikel : I do appreciate them, as I still bought them with my own effort. It’s just that I don’t want to get it out of control as the things I want would be better, bigger and cost more. It’s not a good thing, I would say. If only I can try staying simple without looking at those extra cash/like if I didnt have that extra cash.
Irene : Student that time no commitment mah, like Egghead said. Now you got a house, a car, a child and etc to look after, so you need more money loh.
Tracy : Thanks for your compliments. However, to some of them, the RM1600 handphone is not necessary. The RM2400 digital camera is not necessary as well. But I have to say that, I do know how to spend wisely compare to kids nowadays, who only know how to put our their hands and ask for it. *shrugs* I will look into it, 100-150 per month is not really enough to do a fixed investment, I think.
Pianonee : I bought my handphone N70 before the digital camera ler. :P Kekez. Ha, i not like you. My stuffs don’t need to be the best or the latest, but must at least, make me feel worth it when I spend big money on it. Then can already. Hehe. As for clothings, anything will do can liao. I am not very particular about clothing. Glad that you realized your mistake. Hehe. Hopefully I won’t repeat your mistake too.
Allison : Well said, really. I need to come up with a plan, a plan that can satisfy all criteria - earn, spend and save. Any financial consultant out there willing to help me, this small shrimp? Hehe. Oh, errr, find a rewarding part time job like mine? :P
August 11th, 2006 18:28
hmm…. spend on something that’s usefull… if u really spend on something is useful then u no need feel so sorry to urself lar…
eat less lor…wahhaha….. take 20% of ur income and save it at bank…
August 12th, 2006 00:52
The bank is called http://www.kaihong2u.com
LOL ! Open a normal saving accounts, without the ATM card.
And the passbook for the saving account, hand it over to someone
that you trust like parents.
Do no apply online banking. So you can easily bank in money into
this account, and difficult to dig it out.
Or no need normal saving accounts, every RM1000 you put into
the bank as Fix Deposit for say 1 year. Now is around 4% return,
some bank give you up to 5% to lock your money for 3 or 5 years.
Look at the positive side is that, the bank will take care of these
money for you while giving you interest, not too bad yeah ?
Or I heard some insurance company has this short term investment
plan for policy holders, return rates = approximately 6% yearly.
Aiya, worst come to worst, i rugi sikit lah, let me handle the money
for you , lol !! run away fast fast !!
Ingat, sikit sikit, lama jadi bukit !!
August 12th, 2006 07:59
honestly, its normal. when you have lots of money out of nowhere, you tend to buy more things that you haven’t gotten for yourself. i always go shopping on the first day of my allowance month (or maybe that’s just me with my sales syndrome). try saving 70% of ur salary into ur bank account. don’t hold too much money in ur wallet. limit yourself. ask urself 10 reasons why u should buy the things that you’re planning to spend ur money foolishly on. if yes, how will “that stuff” benefit you?
August 12th, 2006 09:34
Milly : Even if its spending on something useful, whether it can pass through my current conscience, is another thing lah.
Kai Hong : Eh, you are the person who told me there’s such account one leh. Can bank in but cannot withdraw out one leh. -.-lll Every RM1000 only RM40 ah, so little. :P Haha, I let you handle, you give me 10% interest lah. Hahaha… How? :P
Cheng Sim : 70% of my salary? What am I going to do with the balance 30%? -.-l Yeah, I don’t like keeping money in my wallet either. It makes me spend more only. Hmmm…
August 12th, 2006 13:59
if you can still have this type of mind set, and with this i mean that you still realise what’s happening..then you’re okay. :)
you have not forgotten the hardship. you are who you are because of yourself. and you should feel proud of yourself for your achievements and reward yourself accordingly.;)
It’s nothing to feel guilty about. It’s not like you’re using illegal money or using all your father’s money and stuff right?:)
cheer up la jason kor!
August 12th, 2006 18:03
It’s always a good saying - If you fail to plan, you plan to fail. A good reminder isn’t it… Heh, will try to find la… sounds more like “tou gao” to press uh. As what u replied to Tracy that 100 - 150 per month is not enough for a fixed investment… why not? Did u consider insurance? It’s also a kind of investment, that come with protection. A good commitment I would say. And there’s so many good package available out there according to what u could afford. That’s how I majorly save too… although sometimes it feels quite tough, but it reminds me of keep working keep saving and not spending simply and no to be lazy. Heh me no selling insurance here but just to share about some good it gives. But be careful in getting a good policy or good company to invest la… Be a great man! Cheeeeeerssss~
August 12th, 2006 18:06
last time ppl earn RM 1 enough to use but i i earn RM 1k also not enough to use..haha..but later got family or want to get a family you will know how to manage the finance liao lar.
August 12th, 2006 22:20
Jolene : You are right as well. I don’t really understand why I would feel so in the first place, it just came to me. Thanks Jolene, will cheer up. :D
Allison : Yeah, am writing for The Star. Kekez. So… Insurance? I think my parents bought 2-3 insurance for me already woh. Really got investment/insurance policy for RM100 to RM150 one ah? Thanks!
1+2mom : Haha, hopefully I will know how to manage by then.
August 13th, 2006 16:34
Those are from ur parents ma… they pay for you right? So what about one that you pay for your own, or even get one for your parents? And you might check what kinda policy they already bought for u, then u can invest to some diff plan lo… Me and my bro share one medical protection & saving plan for our mom… but of course, since their age is higher so the premium also higher la, that’s why MUST plan accordingly lo. Jangan-jangan suddenly cannot afford to pay pulak hehee. Hundred to Haundred fifty, sure got one. If anybody says takde ask the fella come talk to me la wahahahahaaaa!
August 13th, 2006 16:58
lastime when i came out to work… i used to think like u. like Egg said, there will be a point you stop chaing the trend.
now ar, buy one thing oso need to think n think lo… tats why until now i still do not own a PS2… sop sop… :(
Kaihong’s right, that 20% thing is the basic of Financial Control. Save an amount of money aside before you spend away, then TEND to forget you’ve got that money…
when it comes to emergency, you will appreciate that you ‘ve done it.
and maybe an insurance policy is crucial for people like you who is new to the sociaty. Remember, you can’t buy insurance when you Need it!!
August 14th, 2006 00:29
aikS.. i’d tried for a few times to log on ur password protected post with the password u gave me… but it failed.. which i dunno y…
anyway, ppl do get more materialistic (and oso realistic) once they r in tat environment (for example start working or having promoted)… but i believe if u r not tat kind of person, i’m sure u’ll “recover” back frm it…
juz try to differentiate ur needs and wants…
August 14th, 2006 00:32
Allison : Hmmm.. Would really look into it then since you are promoting it so badly. Haha!
Loc Kee : PS2 is nothing one lah. Play awhile also put there to keep dust mia. Same like my micro genius also. Hmm… You selling insurance right? Haha! Got any recommendation anot? :P
Cui Qing : Oh, if it happens again, you need to click on the post title. Sometimes, its cacat mia. :D Hopefully I am not one of them, tats all I can say. The temptation is there.
August 14th, 2006 03:52
Wah, your support network is so strong…they give you damn good advice.
You are still young, enjoy yourself. Since you know how to think like that, you are pretty safe. Don’t worrk, anytime you go too out of line, I promise to bok your head to wake you up. Bok hard hard, promise.
Hmm..Jason good boy…
August 14th, 2006 16:19
Earthtone : Haha… Make sure you bok very hard then. :P Enjoy at such a young age, abit not reasonable right? Hehe. But anyway, thanks yeah.
August 14th, 2006 21:20
hm, i guess everyone said it all huh. so how r u feeling after all those comments? I think its normal la. Perhaps because you are part timing that’s why you feel the money is easy to earn? just wait. Wait til you have commitments, stupid bosses 24/7 behind ur backs, then you know. But then again, know also so wat? still can spend money like water wat. I think your parents tot u well. Even if you are feeling the guilty pleasure, at least you know where the border line is, right? wrong? Sei lo if you answer wrong, then you will soon end up in the debts world. But no worries la, I got confidence in you! Cheers! Enjoy your the things you bought while you can! If not, erm, pass them to me, please.
August 14th, 2006 21:52
Ice Queen : Most likely is because I enjoy and love my job, so I don’t find it a pain YET. Not to mention, my boss is taking good care of me also. Haha! Thanks for the support.
August 15th, 2006 08:12
You’re very wise to think about this when kids around your age just know how to place their hands out for $$$. Remember to enjoy your youth before you get tied down with the “real” world. Splurge a bit doesn’t do much harm, just pace yourself.
August 15th, 2006 11:04
It’s probably just a sense of independence you are finding here.. I mean financial independance.
I used to spend like crazy when I first got my 1K pay check. Buying things that I want but not really need. It’s like, now I got this money, why not splurge on myself, so you get that beautiful bottle of perfume, with scent not that fantastic. The jar of face cream, adding to your stock of 4 jars. The belt that you only wear once. The beautiful blouse that’s 2 size smaller, which you think you will shrink to wear it. The shoes that looked cute in the display counter, but horrible on your feet.. Etc etc. You know.. these things..
Then as you grow older.. you will outgrown this.. and now, I only spend when I need to. Esp with a kid, you think twice before you buy that RM30 towel. :P
August 15th, 2006 12:04
Vien : Hmm… Actually, I am still collecting RM500 from my mum every month for my rental/utility bills/pocket money. After all, I am still a student. Haha! :P But then, its just a matter of time when I start living on my own. I think I will just save those money for my overseas holiday trip.
Zara’s Mama : Heh, I don’t buy things that I don’t really need. :P Just that the things I want usually cost a bomb. -.-lll Errr… That towel was oklah, it was very big (can cover my whole body in terms of horizontally and vertically leh) and comfortable. Most importantly, it absorbs water. :P
August 15th, 2006 14:49
em… about financial issues ya…
normally i plan before i earn… haha… i plan how much to spend and save then i will try to earn that amount of money..
nothing wrong with spending money within our earning ability… but we have to plan ahead so that we won’t suffer in the future…
set up your own financial goals… short term (within few months to 2 years), middle term(within 3 to 5 years) and of course long term ( 10-20 years or maybe for the golden ages spending)…
after planning then try to make the plan work…. review it yearly… then you will know your status and revise it if there is a need…
wow… acting like pro again… pai seh pai seh….. happy earning and spending….
August 15th, 2006 22:26
Ta Wen : Was busying sleeping and studying during the day time, so didn’t reply your comment yet. I have problem handling my money issue, really. I prefer someone to manage my financial account for me instead of me doing the planning. Basically, I hate anything that relates to money. Hence, I am always never be able to plan ahead like you suggested. What more long term 10 - 20 years. Hehe. Well, I will see how it goes as I consult my financial advisor. LOL.
