Chocolate Brownies For “Her”

January 8th, 2006, Jason

I bet you still remember a post titled – “A Night To Remember“, right? The night that I watched “The Myth” with “her“, just the two of us. “Her” birthday is coming soon, not very soon but soon.

Me : What you want for your birthday?
She” : Don’t know.
Me : Think of something, else I don’t know what to give you for present.
She” : I know what I want.
Me : What?
She” : Chocolate Brownies.
Me : Secret Recipe’s?
She” : No.
Me : Then?
She” : Jason’s one.
Me : ……
She” : Kekez.
Me : (Inside my heart) What had I got myself into?

So, I am practically in deep shit now. I google-ed for Chocolate Brownies’ recipe and there were lots of results. I picked two recipes that looked simpler (less preparation), easier (less brain cracking) and mess (less clean up).

Chocolate Brownies #0001

Ingredients :

1. 1/3 cup shortening (What is shortening?)
2. 2 squares (2 ounces) unsweetened chocolate (How many ml?)
3. 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
4. 1 cup sugar (The standard cup is how much? My cup very extra big one!)
5. 2 eggs
6. 3/4 cup all-purpose flour (Is this the normal flour we use? The anchor brand?)
7. 1/4 teaspoon salt
8. 1/2 cup chopped walnuts

Prepartions :

1. In a saucepan over low heat, melt shortening and chocolate, stirring constantly; cool.
2. Beat in vanilla and sugar.
3. Add eggs one at a time, beating after each addition.
4. Sift flour and salt together; add to saucepan mixture.
5. Stir in chopped walnuts and blend well.
6. Spoon into a greased and floured 8-inch square pan.
7. Bake at 325° for about 25 minutes.

Chocolate Brownies #0010

Ingredients :

1. 340g/12oz dark chocolate
2. 255g/9oz unsalted butter (Is that the normal butter?)
3. 3 medium eggs (I didn’t know eggs got small, medium and big sizes. Extra large?)
4. 255g/9oz dark muscovado sugar (What is dark muscovado sugar?)
5. 110g/4oz plain flour
6. 1 tablespoon of baking powder
7. Pinch of salt

For variation :

1. 55g/2oz raspberries, unsalted pistachios, hazelnuts or white chocolate pieces.

Method :

1. Preheat the oven to 170C/325F/Gas 3 and butter a 23cm/9in cake tin.
2. Sift together the flour, salt and baking powder.
3. In a bowl, over a pan of hot water, melt the chocolate and butter together.
4. Whisk the eggs and slowly add the sugar.
5. Beat in the chocolate mixture and gently fold in the flour.
6. Pour into the cake tin and bake for 35 minutes until the surface is set but a skewer comes out with a little of the mixture clinging to it.
7. Remove and cool slightly before placing on a wire rack to cool.
8. Cut into pieces and keep in a tin or in the fridge.

For variations:

1.Follow the recipe until stage 4.
2. After you have folded in the flour, add your chosen ingredient.
3. Proceed as per the base recipe.

The baker’s daughter, please advice and guide the young one.

My mum is going to scream / warn / keep all the utensils when she sees this post. Another problem obstacle to overcome. Oh yeah, my mum makes one of the best pineapple tarts in Tampin. She should be baking them soon for Chinese New Year, so…

Why can’t “she” ask for Chocholate Chip Hazel Nut Cookies? I feel like strangling “her” now. Grrrrrr……

I have a must write post, but I haven’t got half of the pictures taken on New Year Eve. Therefore, I will keep that post in my drafts until then. Stay tune. –grins-

It has been quite some time since I last featured a blog in “Jason Mumbles”. I think most of you enjoyed reading the blogs that I had once featured, right? Right? –coughs- I noticed that most of the featured bloggers are females, but this time it’s a male. Yes, a guy! So, behold, the first male featured blog of “Jason Mumbles” – “Louyau.net | Painfully Funny“.

The person behind “Louyau.net | Painfully Funny” is Mikel Lian, a first class manufacturing systems engineer from University of East London. He’s 24 years old and is not bad looking. Born in Kuching and stayed in Ipoh and Kuala Lumpur for quite some time. He studied in New Zealand for some time before being “sent” back to Malaysia for “rehabilitation”.

My Sis Is A National Service Trainee

January 3rd, 2006, Jason

1st of January, 2006 has arrived. Other than it was the first day of 2006, it was also the day for my sister - Jamie Lioh to report herself for National Service. Yes, like Jolene Lai, she was selected as the trainee of first batch for 2006’s National Service.

Actually, I have been waiting for this day since she told me she was one of the lucky ones. Other than the reason of me being an evil brother who can’t wait to see her sister suffers in the camp, I hope she will learn a lot of new things that she dare not or never see, play, touch, feel, smell and experience before (Some that I don’t even have the chance to do so.); turning herself into a better person. For your information, this is the first time she leaves the house for more than 3 days. On the other hand, with only my parents and my youngest sister - Janis Lioh in the house, I hope my sis will learn how to do the housework, keep her mouth shut, talk only when needed to, behave herself and not to annoy other people especially me. One stone to kill three birds, awesome!

We left Tampin for Paroi, Seremban at 8AM as all trainees had to gather and report themselves at Stadium Tuanku Abdul Rahman. There were like 20 to 30 buses to fetch the trainees to various camp site such as Ayer Keroh (Malacca), Kuala Pilah (My sis’s camp site), Port Dickson and some places that I never hear before. My dad said one of the camp site is situated right in the middle of an ostrich farm and a deer farm. I pity the trainees at that camp site.

We found the bus and she queued up to board the bus.

I talked teased her a little bit and she started to cry. What the hell…!?!?!?

After 5 seconds, seriously, very seriously, only 5 seconds, she was back to her cheerful mood again. Now, that’s more like the Lioh’s family and my sister.

Her very good best friend, Yen Ching is also one of the lucky ones. Fortunately, she is in the same camp with my sister. At least, both of them have each other and not alone. As we were waiting for the bus to leave, the journalist from China Press came over to interview my mum.

We waited outside the bus for almost 30 minutes while the comander checked with the reception desk for the names, numbers, money and etc. information of the trainees. Talk about “Tak Nak” or the “No Smoking” campaign, even the commander smoked right in front of the parents and in public.

They were given RM5 before they left. Pocket money perhaps? But isn’t that a little wee too little? I think I saw my mum did a little chanting like “Namoamithaba” moments before the bus left. Whether she shed her tears, I have no idea. (After all, this is the first time my sis leaving the house for such a long time.) As for my dad, he loves Jamie the most and you bet, he will be worried and miss her for the next 60+ days.

The bus left and we headed home.

My sis will be back for few days to celebrate Chinese New Year and she will be dismissed around early March, which is less than 3 months. According to my sis, they will be at the camp site for about 60+ days only as there are quite a number of public holidays / festive seasons and February has only 28 days. That’s a good thing, actually.

It won’t be easy for her but I hope my sis can cope with it, be strong, stay unharmed and unhurt. Good luck. -sniff sniff-
