“Experimental” Chocolate Brownies Report
I know you guys have been waiting for this – the result of my “experimental” chocolate brownies for that someone. Due to the excitement nervousness, I kept forgetting to take pictures to complete my “report”. I have 3 recipes to choose from, one contributed by one of my blog readers – Romantic. Since it was my first time baking, I opted for the first recipe since it looked easier and simpler.

Time to time, I checked the oven and the brownies were expanding and “popping” up like a small hill. It was all good until…

When my mum tested it not long after I took it out from the oven, it tasted quite good. It was fluffy in the inside, just like others’ brownies’ textures and crispy on the outside.
However, after nearly 6 hours, the brownies were sort of being “punctured”, and became quite thick and very concentrated. The fluffiness wasn’t there anymore. The brownies surface cracked even more, just like those dried up lake. It was quite sweet as well.
Her feedback was similar to my conclusion as well. If I were to rate myself out of 10 points, I would give a 3 out of 10. As for her, a 5 out of 10, with sympathy marks some more.
In conclusion, it was one ugly birthday brownies ever made and I failed. –frowns-
Any constructive ideas on how to “compensate”?

Hey! How can you sieve your flour on the newspaper? Don’t you know it is unhygenic? Yulk! Maybe that’s why your brownies failed. :p Poor start marks poor end. (… run fast fast, don’t beat me!)

That was recipe number 1 right???
From your last picture, it looked over cooked.. seems oven temp might be too high hence the big crack and sides leaving the pan. The other thing is you have to STIR in the flour ( fold in with wooden spoon) not beat it in– it defeats the purpose of sifting the flour ( to add air) and beating brings up gluten and makes the brown ie chewy.

to compensate ah… easy lah… spend RM50 at Secret Recipe and get a replacement lor… LOL!
p/s: not bad lah for a first-timer :P

don’t understand this make-from-scratch thing, 好好的,现成的不用,却去慢慢做,买现成的然后烘并不是代表没有诚意嘛,傻瓜酱!LOL…

Did you open the oven when the cake was in the oven?
Romantic is right- you must stir the flour. That’s why I don’t use any machine when I bake.
Try again… and please-lah.. sift the flour in a bowl/tupperware!
Good effort- seriously- it’s the thoughts that count. I’ll be so touched if a guy bakes something for me- even if it’s not the prettiest cake. :)

Okay, okay lar. Actually not bad lor for a first timer at his first attempt. And at least u took the initiative to try. But in future, pls sieve the flour into a mixing bowl lar.

you know. since you said that the outer layer was a slight problem and the inside was good, don’t throw it away. u can just cover those up by putting cream on top. imagine cream-topped chocolate brownies! with the cream on top, u can add a little coloured sprinkles. hehe. im a good at cover-ups!

OMG you making brownies and didn’t ask me for help (or for THE recipe)!! =P I can bake really good brownies with heavenly chocolate sauce! Hehe. But really, it’s usually the sincerity that counts when it comes to your case so don’t worry too much. There’s always another time to do it right. And yes, next time, sift the flour on something else besides a newspaper; baking paper perhaps.
