To Work In Coffee Bean

I have been offered a part time job at Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, Jusco Melaka. Allison referred me to the branch manager last week and I was told to wait for their call. With my part time jobs working experience, I was short-listed and they gave me a call today.

RM4.50 per hour is something that I would not want to miss out. I can earn about RM400 plus per month. (RM4.50 * 8 hours * 3 days * 4 weeks = RM432) It brings me a step closer to my dream – getting myself a new mobile phone and having extra pocket money to spend / save.

It will be another working experience for me because it is my first time working in F&B (Food and beverage, for those who do not know.) line. I always avoid working in F&B because it is quite tiring, especially when you work for restaurants or resorts, and most importantly, I can see but cannot touch. That is so cruel, for me. Besides, working in coffee beans is cool. No?

I am (still) really interested to work in Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf.

However, after talking to my dad, a little chatting with my cousin sister and Jinlan (靖岚), it would be better if I scrap the idea of working part time this time. Although my dad is quite OK with me taking up part time jobs, he doubts my ability to juggle between my work and studies. Besides, the subjects I am currently taking are very difficult.

I am taking EEN2056 Physical Electronics where I will be studying Quantum Physics. Quantum Physics is another type of physics where the normal physics and science are not able to explain certain things that happen in the world of engineering, science and physics. ECP2046 Computer Organization And Architecture is another subject on basic design and algorithms of computers, which means more programmings.

Although the manager did offer me a 3 days trial period / training, I think I will make a trip to the Cofee Bean & Tea Leaf, Jusco Melaka within these few days to inform the manager that I have to reject the offer.

So sad, I am this close to be part of the Cofee Bean & Tea Leaf team.

What is next? Mc Donalds? Secret Recipe? Hmm…

P/S :

Allison, thank you very much for referring me to the manager and I truly appreciate your help. I am sorry that I have to turn down the offer as well. “Teh tarik” on me! -wink-

http://www.coffeebean.com.my actually does not exists. Perhaps I should buy the domain name. -evil grins-

Happy birthday to Auntie Suzette.

No problem mate! You know what you need better ;-) I think it might be their loss for not having you as part of the crew heheheee!! Who knows, maybe one day you would. Have faith in how far you can go, and make an effort to achieve the long-term goal of yours. Never give up and give in - i don’t think you would :-) Hahaa… by the way, i don’t drink teh tarik… prefer Milo-O-ais-Kow… or Hot Chocolate?? Hehehee boleh..? (me so bad kekeke) And yeah, for MengZ, 4.50 per hour in F&B line is pretty good pay (for part-timer). Majority it’s only 3.00 to 4.00 ;-)

Parents… My dad crushed my dream of working in a bar as well. I’ve half a mind to apply for an internship at his company and harrass him all day.

i think rm 4.50 is a good rate, considering this is your first venture. I don’t think the regular fastfood joints pay that much. If anyone is looking for a job at an f&b outlet in klcc, let me know.

Better not put yourself into temptation, temptation of sapu-ing the food in coffee bean and tea leaf. :P

Actually it’s better to concentrate on your studies. That’s the priority. Mobile phone old a bit never mind loh. As long as usable.

Your priority is not the mobile phone but to finish your studies and get that first job.. It work out better in the long run.. $4.50 is considered good??? ( Just wondering as I’ve been out of Malaysia 3/4 of my life.)

    Hi Jason,

I am not in the position to give you any advice, but I can share a bit of my experience..

I worked part time in various jobs during my university study, and the experience and learning is worth nothing less than the study itself.. so think about it.

btw during my days, $4.50 is quite a common rate for F&B chains. Some places like klcc used to pay up to $8 during weekends.

Working in F&B line is tiring and the pay is low….even for a full timer like myself but hmmmm…been in this line for ages…. Anyway, what are u gonna do for part time job…believe the best is still in a small restaurant where they pay you like RM5 an hour. Barrista is fun and you can learn a lot too especially coffee making…Part Time waiter is kinda tough. U might even ended up being scolded for no reason and dats sh*tty. Good Luck Bro

MengZ : But then there was a case where a blogger bought the domain visa.com.my and was filled a lawsuit by Visa? Have to becareful, you know. Heh, for Malacca, thats very high already. ;-)

Allison : Still have to thank you. ;-) Give you drumstick, you want thigh. Don’t be so greedy! :P

Tash : Haha! May I take your order, Miss Tash?

Ellone : I am not like you, work for the sake of working/money. I work with a goal, an objective and dreams. :P

Egghead : Of course, you helped a little bit. Haha!

JiNz : Thank you very much, sis!

Mossie Ol` Chin : How about a cup of “teh tarik” at mamak stall instead?

theZEBRA : LOL. You are not afraid that your dad might be even more strict to you? Haha! But that will be one sight to look out for, father and son working together or going against each other.

lx : Yeah, RM4.50 is quite high already for a small place like mine. Its not my first time working part time anyway.

Zara’s Mama : Yaloh. I scare I will “take away” the whole tin of chocolate powder. :P Haha! I’m a gadget freak, can’t tahan using this 3310. >:)

Kampungkai : Dream on lah you! :P Thanks!

Romantic : Yes, I know that’s why I decided to skip this time. Yeap, for a small town like Malacca, its quite high already. RM4.50 can give you a very decent meal whereas in KL, its kinda low.

Jee : That is what I think of too. But my studies should be the piority. :-(

foodcrazee : I won’t work as a waiter though. I try to avoid F&B jobs but Coffee Bean is something new and will definitely give me more new experience compare to working as a waiter in a restaurant. Thanks!

Yupe, studying is the priority. Many of my “cool” friends were working in coffee beans and Starbucks when they are in secondary school and college. Most drop out of the school when they can’t catch up. Many years later, they became mechanics, some work in the pub, and some become low paid worker. It’s good to think long term, many says that what you learn in school is not important at all. In the technical field, this is totally untrue, trust me, all the subjects you learn are important.

Sometimes its not that you are not good in the subject. I used to have a habit of studying the whole syllabus for each subject. Though I know more, yet I score badly in the exams. So, just study what you need, and do some past exam papers each time. When I was studying, I spent 8 hours each day reading, the effort will pay off. I have gone through the 4 to 5 years in college, and I understand that in the first few semester, it is always difficult.

You can always add ‘extra ingredient’ especially if you deal with fussy customers. Now I really have to stay away from Jusco Melaka!

Mr. Kiasu : Actually, I wasn’t thinking that far. ;-) I know my studies should be the piority, but sometimes, you just can’t help it with the desire/luxury that I want to have by earning some extra pocket money. However, since that I have “quitted’ the job, I got to focus on my studies now. Thanks for your advice.

Auntie Maria : Wei, it’s the cookies’, cakes’ and confectionaries’ pride and honour to be eaten by me. :P Haha! I will.

Shinky : Direct sales is not my choice. ;-)

Aleanor : Haha! I can make my own mocha though. You wanna have a look? It’s really yummy though.

Paul Tan : To me, is not about the resume thing. Its about the process of learning something and gaining experience. Besides, while still taking my degree, there are not much jobs offer for me that has flexible working hours to suit my classes. Hmm… :-)

Jase Lee : LOL. If you come to Malacca, I will give you extra ingredients food. :D

Jason, it is actually very tough working in F&B, you are right. I worked in McD when waiting for my SRP result. I only got paid RM1.80 per hour then (1997). If you work 8 hours a day, you’ll need to stand 8 hours fully - your legs will be so tired! Furthermore, the income is not good lah!

After my SPM, i didn’t go for this type of job. Instead, I gave tuisyen. It was really good money, especially if you can find 1-on-1 students. Is there any particular subject that you are good at? I only taught 2 subjects: mathes and science.

But to teach, you’ll have a great responsibility to ensure your student improve in the subject. Not easy, but fit into what you are doing now - studying. It helps you to refresh some subjects. Try secondary school students, less headache.

    just my 2 cents.

Suzette : No problem. ;) RM1.80 is really low, but RM4.50 is different. Haha! ;-) I wonder if my PMR Science and Mathematics still usable or not? I am frekaing good in these 2 subjects those days though. Hmm…
