John’s Bread For Dinner
There are times when I just do not know what to eat, considering that Bukit Beruang does not have much to offer. Unfortunately, yesterday was one of those days. Actually, it happens almost every day, which also explains the lack of food posts lately. -whines-
It was then when I decided to have bread instead of rice for my dinner. I SMS-ed Jerry who was forced willing to buy “John’s Bread” for me despite the rain. (Thanks, Jerry!)
Although John does not make the bread, I absolutely have no idea why they call it “Roti John”, loosely translated - “John’s Bread”. Why not “Roti Jason“, “Roti Juliana“, “Roti Jinlan“, “Roti Jerry”, “Roti Jamie“, “Roti James“, “Roti Jase“, “Roti Jayelle” or “Roti JFE 8555” (Heh, all the J’s!) Why must it be “Roti John” I have no idea.

“Roti John” uses sardines, eggs, cabbages, mayonnaise and chili sauce as its main ingredients. John will first beat the sardines with eggs until everything looks like a pile of fresh puke. The bread is toasted with a little bit of butter to give the aroma and crispiness.
The next step is to spread the puke sardines onto the bread and toast it again on the hot pan. Once it is cooked, John will spread some mayonnaise, chili sauce and sprinkle some cabbages on it before serving it to you.

It is that simple. At the price of RM1.50 each, it is definitely a good choice when you need something to munch on during tea time, “yamcha” session, for snack and even proper meals. In my case, it was my dinner.
Oh, I ate 2 of them. –grins-

According to sbd18, the best “Roti John” is at TTDI Wet Market’s car park area. It is served with a nicely cooked sunny side up. Business starts at night and usually will end around 3AM or before the wet markets opens. Kai Hong recommends this stall that serves this “Roti John” with minced meat at Taman Kosas Ampang, right in front of the 7-11.

From what i heard, it was first named as “Roti John Travolta” in UTM JB area after the famous actor but the name was shortened shortly after that to accomodate the need for a shorter, quicker access name… However, the source of this incredible story still remain anonymous.

November 25th, 2005 22:50
Is Roti John everywhere made with sardines? I thought it was some chopped up meat. But never had it before la.. b’cos it looks too oily..
November 25th, 2005 22:53
Zara’s Mama : No idea though. I once saw them used sardines. Kai Hong’s version uses minced meat. Perhaps different place different ingredients. But, trust me, even though, they use sardines, you hardly can eat chunks of sardines in it. It is like just for the taste of sardines only. Hmm… Most of the things that taste delicious are oily. Haha! Can’t help it. :D
