Small Big “Pau”

“Big Pau大包”, as its name implies, the “Pau”supposed to be big, or at least, bigger than the usual size of a “Pau”. Assuming everyone knows what “Pau” is, lets just cut straight to the point. I found this really old coffee shop somewhere along Jonker Street, to be precise, Jalan Tukang Emas that has been operating its business for at least 70 years. The coffee shop’s name is “Rong Mao 荣茂”. After having a few of my usual 5AM breakfast routine there, I think their “Big Pau” is currently on the top of my list. However, I am very sure, only their “Big Pau” is the best while others are simply not edible sucks.

The “Pau” is like 20% smaller than the usual size of a “Big Pau”. I prefer to call it “Small Pau” instead, since I can eat at least 3 at one go.

The filling is a big piece of minced pork and a piece of 1/8 of hard-boiled eggs. (It is very difficult to find eggs in “Big Pau” nowadays.) The meat tastes and smells good. It has just the right amount of salt, seasonings and the softness. Most important, the juice or sauce is enough to drip all over your hands if you are not too careful with it. If you peek off the bottom part of the “Pau”, you can see the juices inside it, like a small bowl of soup.

Normally, a commercialized “Big Pau”will have thick “skin” with little fillings. It makes you feel like you are eating “Man Tou 馒头” instead. However, there is no gap between the filling and the “skin”, in other words, it is a fully loaded “Big Pau”. Chinese says “真材实料”.

The shop has about 70 years of history and is a favourite coffee shop for a lot of the elderly that stay nearby. The waitress and boss know their customers very well and will prepare their favourite tea and beverages the moment they sit down. Business starts as early as 5AM until 12 Noon. However, there was one time I went to the shop around 10AM, and all the “Big Pau”s were sold out though.

If you happen to visit this shop, I repeat, only the “Big Pau” is delicious, others are simply not edible sucks, in my own opinion. Auntie Suzette has visited this coffee shop recently, hopefully, she agrees with what I said, else I can stop writing food review.
