Bloggers’ Gathering / KL Trip - Day 3 And Day 4
Warning : My posts about my holiday trip are getting longer and longer. However, I have included as much photo as possible for you to get a rough idea of my trip without reading what I have written although I would appreciate and be grateful if you read through the article.
If you do not want to miss all the fun that I had in my trip, click on the link to read Day 1 and Day 2.
There is a 2km long with 700 stalls night market at Taman Connaught, Cheras every Wednesday. Among the 700 stalls, there is a stall that sells Fermented “Tau Fu 豆腐” or “Chau Tau Fu 臭豆腐” which I wanted to try since long time ago. It was Wednesday and it was my best chance to have my hands on the “Chau Tau Fu”. Due to lack of communication between Chee Yong, Chun Kit and me, we only left UKM at nearly 10.30PM and was expected to reach Cheras at 11PM. However, we lost our way and reached the destination at 11.30PM instead but the night market was still going on. According to Earl-Ku, the night market operates until 1AM. So, I hurriedly went searching for the stall that sells “Chau Tau Fu”.
Earl-Ku said you could smell it from far away even though you are standing quite a distance from the stall. However, I walked past many stalls but still could not smell it. I asked one of the hawkers and the guy replied me in Cantonese, “The ‘Chau Tau Fu’ lorry caught fire last week. So, I do not think he will be doing his business for the next few weeks.” I was really disappointed and my mood was totally spoilt. As it was approaching 1AM, we had McDonalds for dinner instead. –sniff sniff-
Thursday afternoon, I decided to head out to the city by myself to meet up with Earl-Ku at Petaling Street. Petaling Street is also known as Chinatown or “茨敞街”, and is also a heaven if you want to shop for pirated goods. You can get any imitation product here, from watches, shirts, handbags, belts, clothes, accessories, DVDs, VCDs, CDs, perfumes and a lot more like fruits, flowers, foods, drinks and toys at a very cheap price.

Earl-Ku was “on duty” that day, so it would be convenient for him to meet me there. I parked my car at University LRT Station and took LRT to Petaling Street. I waited at the McDonalds for about 5 minutes before Earl-Ku showed up. My ¼ full bucket Cantonese was put to test in meeting up with Earl-Ku, thank God he actually understood what I was trying to say. –lol-
Earl-Ku brought me to corner shop lot that sells beef noodles, a shop within walking distance from Petaling Street. The shop has been operating for three generations already, and there is one worker has been working there since he was 17 and he is now in his 40s. It used to be a very hot and stuff shop until they renovate it and installed air conditioners some time ago. Earl-Ku said there are another 2 different shops selling another 2 different types of beef noodles around Petaling Street.

The beef noodle in this shop is totally different from Seremban’s and Tangkak’s. It is very similar to “Wan Tan 云吞” noodle that you can get it anywhere and anytime. They use minced beef to substitute minced pork in their noodles and for an extra RM0.50; you get a bowl of noodles covered in minced beef. It is so much till you basically cannot see the noodles.

It is served with a bowl of mixed ingredients of beef meat “牛什” that comes in a bowl of clear and not totally tasteless soup “清汤”. However, you can change it to all beef meatballs also, depending on your liking.

It took me a little bit of effort to finish the bowl of noodles as it is really big in portion and I ate my lunch just before I came out from UKM. It is really delicious. Earl-Ku paid for my lunch and we walked back to Petaling Street, visiting Central Market and passing by his college. I did not take a photo of a crazy man doing a magic show with a can of coke, right in front of his college. Who wants to mess with a crazy man after all, right?

We were in Petaling Street again and we bought some drinks to quench our thirst. It is the famous “Loh Hon Gor Long Ngan Beng Tong Dan Dong Gua 罗汉果龙眼冰糖炖冬瓜”. Indeed, there were many people queuing up to buy the drink. Earl-Ku said the boss is driving a Mercedes Benz (More than 1, actually.) currently, despite the fact that he is only selling this beverage in Petaling Street.

We walked around Petaling Street and we stopped at “Kwong Ho Tong 光和堂” to eat “Kuai Leng Gou 龟苓膏”. I always wonder why the shop is renovated into such high class stall as it is selling “Kuai Leng Gou” and some other herbal beverages like “Wong Lou Kat 王佬吉” only. Curiosity killed the cat wallet as it costs RM6 for a bowl of “Kuai Leng Gou”. For those who do not know, “Kuai Leng Gou” is a jelly type “dessert” that is made from various Chinese herbal medicines. It is served with sugar water to cover the bitterness in it. However, there are people who like the bitterness too. So, the sugar water is an option for you.

As I have written earlier, Earl-Ku was “on duty”. Therefore, he has to stay alert and listen to the walkie-talkie all the time. It was nearly 3PM when we bided farewell as Earl-Ku was required to get back to his work. It was fun meeting Earl-Ku as he does not look like a very fierce person, although he has the look of those mafia group members. He is a friendly person and has a lot of stories to tell you, due to his “black and white” background. Nice to meet you! Catch up with you another time, OK? Cheers! Next time remember to bring the “K-Zhai” (Or was it K5?) for me! –lol-

Then, I went back to my car and drove to Section 17, Petaling Jaya to meet up with my friend – Meei Tzy while waiting for NeeNee to call me for dinner. At about 5.30PM, I received a call from Body Glove office. (I will blog about it in details later.) I waited until 8PM until she has finished with her work in campus. We headed to SS2’s “Wong Kok Char Chan Teng 旺角茶餐厅” for our first dinner together in K.L. Honestly, I am not a fan of these entire Hong Kong style restaurants although I have not step into these restaurants yet. I believe it is just a high class hang out place for teenagers and young adults like us, where they are able to slaughter you like a fish on the chopping board.
The restaurant was full of people that evening. It was not easy to have a conversation with NeeNee due to the noise (Excuses, Jason! Excuses! –shrugs-) and I thought their air conditioners were not working as well. She ordered French Toast “法兰斯土司面包” for dinner and a mixture of tea and coffee “Yuen Yong 鸳鸯”. I ordered a vase of peach and passion fruit juice and a plate of I-have-forgotten-what-name-it-was. It was a plate of rice with beef steak that comes with 2 different types of sauce. She seemed to enjoy her meal but not for me. Either I ordered the wrong thing or it is meant to taste that awful, I only ate 3/10 of my rice. The juice is good though. My overall experience in this restaurant was way below average. (Am I too picky?) I was ready to be served as a sushi dish when the bill came. –sweat-

Loc Kee called me and said he was on the way to SS2 to meet me. I fetched NeeNee back to her car and met up with Loc Kee. Loc Kee spotted me easily even before I got down from my car, as if I was a celebrity. We went to K.T.Z “记得食” Dessert Shop, which sells a huge variety of desserts, snacks and “Tong Shui 糖水”. I ordered my favourite – Black Glutinous Rice “Hak Luo Mai 黑糯米” and one of their specialties – Lotus Seed and Red Dates Double Boiled with “Snow Frog” “Lin Zi Hong Zou Dan Shuet Ga 莲子红枣炖雪蛤”. Loc Kee said “Shuet Ga 雪蛤” comes from a certain part of the frogs. Can somebody verify this? (To me, it does not matter where it comes from actually. “Eat First, Die Later” is our motto. –lol-) Both are very delicious, especially the Black Glutinous Rice.

Loc Kee ordered Peanuts Porridge “Fa Sang Hu 花生糊”. I noticed the “Fa Sang Hu” I ate in Malacca is different from the one in K.L. Malacca’s is white in colour and has lots of peanuts chunks, unlike K.L.’s, which every thing is blended and boiled together.

Meng Zhee called me to ask where I was, as he wanted to meet me too. But when I told him I was in SS2, he said he could not meet me anymore. I think the distance between SS2 and his house is a little bit far for him. Do not worry, we will meet one day; with Xi Voon of course. –wink-
Loc Kee is a very cheerful and handsome dad. He loves to laugh and his laugh is very unique. Those who have met him in person should agree with me. He laughs every 1 minute and his trademark laughs can be heard. He is quite talkative too and does not look like a dad with a little girl named Sweet Sweet. He even showed me his family photo and Sweet Sweet Mummy is very pretty! Nice to meet you, Uncle Loc! Thank you for coming all the way from Kepong to SS2 to meet me even though you have to meet your friend in Subang after meeting up with me. Thanks for the supper as well and hope you do not mind that I ordered two bowls. –blek-

I left Petaling Jaya with Loc Kee guiding me and headed back to UKM. We went to Feeling Café again and the girl whom I wrote about in my Day 1 post, was on duty. –laughs cunningly- I shall keep it for a dedicated entry. (Hint : I took a photo with her.)
P/S :
This post is actually 3 pages long, without photos. –sweat-
Coming up next : Meeting the Mums who blog with their little ones – Twinsmom and the Belles, Msau and Siao Qing, Lazy Bone and Ian, and also Tiu Nia Sing, Loc Kee (again) and Milly (again).

wa..looks like you enjoyed your trip. I stay in that part of PJ too. IMO if you wanted to dine at those HK style cafes, Kim Gary would be a better choice.
The longan-drink stall at Petaling St has been there as long as I can remember (since I’m reallllly young) & there’s usually only 2 maids there working plus so good business, no surprise he’s rich =)
Your pics making me miss all the food la =P

if i’m not wrong, “Shuet Ga 雪蛤” is the fallopian tube of a certain species of frog from china. fallopian tube is the reproductive tract or duct that connects the ovary and uterus, it carries the eggs. need i explain more?
I got a question also, is “Kuai Leng Gou 龟苓膏” made from turtle or tortuise like its name suggest? anyone knows this?

Milly : Jealous leh? Haha! Go eat yourself loh~!
Diana : I doubt Kim Gary will taste much better than Wong Kok also. :) Heh, he must have been there for like 5 years or more? Kekez, you will be back in Malaysia soon. Be patience. :P
Andy : I think what you said is true. :D Thanks for the info. No, “Kuai Leng Gou” got nothing to do with tortoise. (If not mistaken)
Observer : Is that a critic or a compliment?
MengZ : Should have called me, I could have pick you up.
Simon : Yeap, I did! ;)
Egg Head : Ok, I will find my way to Kepong one day. :P Nevermind, Loc Kee paid the bills. LOL.

diana: the Longan drink stall is actually mor of a scam, its a conspiracy to sell a cup of ice at RM1.20 … and he has like 5 person to man that stall - with one just to collect the thrash … and actually he has more like a few dozen of workers, as he is like the taiko of fruits in P. Street, you have DVD taiko right? and you have Shoe taiko, the guy who owns the Longan drink is Fruit Taiko!
egghead: haha of course la, the one in pj u eat in an air-condiditioned shop wo .. but most of the time have to sit outside wan … the on the other hand, the one in Kepong - you sit by the roadside only! haha but get to eat some nice roasted duck there … yeah forgot to mention the Kei Tak Sek in Imbi - fucking lansi wan!
Jason: i think the Longan boss has more than 1 benz …(read above) and the guy i told you has been there since 17 is not the boss, its the guy who works for him, who prepares the noodles.

sorry, i had to correct some of the stuff you said … remember … there was a conspiracy going on?

that rice thing looks like cheese baked rice with mince meat?
August 9th, 2005 12:07
Earl Ku : Ok, I edit the post.
Lobak : Not cheese. I think some “yuen yong” beef steak rice.
