Bloggers’ Gathering / KL Trip - Day 2

If you do not want to miss all the fun that I had in my trip, click on the link to read Day 1.

I promised to meet up with Carol and Mr. Kiasi at their housing area in Cheras on Tuesday night. Since Chee Yong and Chun Kit were busy with their group discussion about their respective assignments, I drove to Cheras alone that night. It was not difficult to find the place as Mr. Kiasi has given me a lot of information and some maps before I came to K.L. As Carol was still not ready, I went to pick up Mr. Kiasi first at a nearby petrol station.

I always think that Mr. Kiasi is a skinny guy, shorter than me by 10cm, small in size, wears a pair of spectacles and looks like a bookworm. How wrong I was the moment I saw him through my window. He looks totally different from what I have imagined. He has a matured looking face that does not look like a Form 5 student. Since Mr. Kiasi wanted to remain anonymous, I shall not describe him in details.

Not long after that, Carol called me to tell me that she was ready. Mr. Kiasi and I went around looking for her house. I was excited to meet Carol as we have been chatting and SMS-ing for quite some time, not to mention being called “idiot” a few times. Besides, I have only seen her photos before this. Carol is a pretty and talkative girl. However, I did not get to see her “other” side yet. (I still remember your dark secret, Carol. –laughs cunningly-) I wanted to buy a stalk of sunflower for her, but there was no florist to be seen while I was on the way to Cheras.

I wanted to have Ampang’s “Yong Tau Fu酿豆腐” for dinner, but the traffic was too heavy and we ended up in Carol’s favourite place – Sweet Talk. I decided to give it a try since Emotionalistic did a fairly good review about this place before. After I sat down, I only realized it was just opposite the famous “yamcha” place - Steven’s corner. No wonder the buildings looked familiar as I have been to the area some time ago, when I came to K.L. to attend April’s open house party.

I ordered their specialty – “Mango Ice Fire Mountain芒果冰火山”, loosely translated from its Chinese name. It is good actually, as Emotionalistic like it very much. However, with that much of shredded ice, the amount of mango given is not enough, what more when you need to share it with another person.

As for my dinner, I ordered “Rice with Pork Ribs in Bean Curd Sauce 豆酱排骨饭”. It is very good and I enjoyed it even though the portion is a little small. There are about 5 to 6 pieces of meat and a bowl of rice, with some spring onions sprinkled on it. However, they did not reheat the food for me before serving it. It was cold; else it would have tasted better. If you are pork ribs lover, you should try this dish if you ever visit Sweet Talk.

Carol ordered her favourite dish – “Fried Crabmeat Sticks”. It tastes not too bad actually, but the crabmeat inside is a little too slimy for my liking. After all, I do not like to eat the artificial crabmeat sticks that are sold in packets in supermarkets. Mayonnaise is served together with the dish for you to eat with.

She ordered “Tau Fu Fa” for dessert that comes in a little wooden bucket. The special about this dessert is that it is made on the spot, not ready made type. The waiter pours one liter of soya bean milk into the wooden bucket and you will have to wait for 5 to 10 minutes for the soya bean milk to harden into “Tau Fu Fa”. However, it does not taste as good as the one I ate in Seri Kembangan’s Night Market, and the price is 13 times cheaper than Sweet Talk’s too.

As for Mr. Kiasi, he ordered a combo set meal that consists of a main dish, a dessert and a beverage. He chose “Fried Kuey Teow with Beef 干抄牛肉河” as the main dish. There is nothing special about it as it is basically a duplicate from those Hong Kong style restaurants. The taste is also so-so only, a disappointment for me.

We talked quite a lot that night, nothing much about blogsphere as Carol has basically stopped blogging and I have not been reading blogs for the past few days. We chatted for about 90 minutes and we bid each other farewell, as I have to rush back to UKM to meet Philips, a.k.a Kai Hong and Carol has appointment with her colleagues at 11PM as well. We took a group picture for remembrance before we left the place.

After dropping them back home, I drove back and reached UKM 10 minutes before Kai Hong did. He came all the way from Bukit Kayu Ara to UKM in his F-117 within 50 minutes, inclusive of getting ready and pumping petrol. Bukit Kayu Ara is the north part of Bandar Utama (I am not too sure about this.), but I still do not know how far the distance between his place and UKM is. Anyway, we (Chee Yong and Chun Kit were finally free to join me.) hopped into his F-117 and cruised all the way to Jalan Alor at 120 knots.

He is a very friendly and funny person. He joked a lot with his lame but funny jokes and it did not take very long for all four of us to get comfortable with each other. After all, Kai Hong is a sales executive and sales executives have very good social skills. They need to cheat persuade their customers to buy their products by using only their mouth. Chun Kit said he looks like the fat version of Andy Lau. Actually, he does look a little bit like Andy Lau, the fat version of course.

Since it was already midnight, Kai Hong brought us to Jalan Alor for supper, a very heavy supper in fact. Jalan Alor is just the street behind Jalan Bukit Bintang and there are many hawker stalls and restaurants along the road. You can see many families and workers having their supper there even it is nearly 1AM. We were lucky enough to find a parking space right after we turned into Jalan Alor.

We sat down and ordered our food. First, it was fried oyster, “Hor Chien 蚝煎”. It tastes simply delicious; in fact, it tastes even better than Malacca’s. This is because it does not have too much “Shu Fen 薯粉” and eggs. It is very crunchy and the hawker is very generous with the oysters. The oysters are big and juicy, unlike Malacca’s, which you have to use a magnifying glass to search for an oyster. This is definitely a must-eat dish if you are in Jalan Alor for meals. However, I do not know which stall though as it was Philips who ordered it. He also ordered Ipoh’s “Shar Hor Fan 沙河粉” from a nearby stall, which is quite good too.

I did not miss out the frog porridge, “Tin Gai Zhuk 田鸡粥” from Jalan Alor, which was once recommended by James from Loopy Meals too. It comes in two different clay pots; one contains white porridge with a dash of pepper and some spring onions on it while the other contains “Tin Gai 田鸡” cooked in dried chilies and onions, or “Kung Bou 宫保” style. The “Kung Bou” is slightly different from Malacca’s. It has sweet taste in the sauce and does not have strong dried chilies smell, which I dislike. It is very delicious although it is a little bit expensive, RM14 per set.

“Suen Tim La La 酸甜啦啦” was also on the menu. The “La La 啦啦”s were cooked in sweet and source style. It has very thick sauce and tastes delicious. The size of the “La La”s is huge and juicy. It has been cleaned thoroughly before it is served and thumbs up for the hawker for doing this. Sometimes, the shells will emit a stinky smell or mud pouring out from the shells if they are not cleaned properly. It will definitely ruin your meal and mood if they happen while you are having your meal.

Kai Hong also ordered a dish that I have only eaten once before – “Gam Heong Zhuk Tan 甘香竹滩”. It looks like a mini size bamboo, but it is part of the shells’ family. The meat is also similar to “La La”, just that they are different in terms of shape. I only ate this once in Malacca, so this can be considered as something new to me. However, it is delicious too! (Come to think of it, almost every food that I ordered and ate tasted delicious. –blek-)

It took us almost 40 minutes to finish all the food on the table. We were full, so full that it nearly made me bloated but did not. The supper cost us Kai Hong nearly RM80. RM80 for 5 dishes, is it expensive? I have no idea, but for me, who comes from Malacca where every thing is consider cheap, it sure is very expensive.

Later, Kai Hong drove us around K.L. in his F-117, acting as a taxi driver and a tour guide for the three of us. He drove past a huge Chinese cemetery, which is a huge contrast to the buildings around the cemetery. He showed us many shortcuts to go certain places in K.L. as well. However, the haze was all over K.L. and I could not have a good view of the city that never sleeps.

After driving around the city for almost 30 minutes, Kai Hong sent us back to UKM. His F-117 was so quiet and comfortable plus after having such heavy supper, I nearly dozed off while on the way back. It was nearly 1.30AM by the time we reached UKM and I called it a day.

P/S :

Mr. Kiasi and Carol,

It was nice meeting you in person after reading your blog for a few months / since you started blogging. Although I did not talk much with you, I enjoyed the dinner with you. It was fun meeting bloggers who are younger than me by a few years. Hopefully, we will get to meet again soon and perhaps, by that time, we will have more things to talk about. Cheers!

Kai Hong,

I am so sorry and it is very kind of you to come all the way from your place to UKM, despite the long distance between both places, late at night and brought us around K.L. even after the price of the petrol has increased sometime ago. Thanks for the wonderful, delicious and expensive supper too! It was nice meeting you in person and you have the same sense of humour in your blog and real life. Although you are 7 years elder than me (I am 21 this year.), we still can hang out together and chit-chat. Nice to meet you! Cheers!

If you know the exact English name for the dishes above, do leave a comment so that I can edit it and give out the correct information. There are a lot of things that I do not know the English names like “La La”, “Zhuk Tan”, “Tin Kai”.

Coming up next : Meeting up with Earl-Ku, NeeNee and Loc Kee.
