Bloggers’ Gathering / KL Trip - Day 1
Warning : This post contains a lot of photos and it is a little longer than my usual posts. Stream-my-ass is highly recommended. In other words, this post is not dial-up friendly. (Since when my blog is dial-up friendly?)
I made a decision to visit Sri Kembangan’s all-Chinese night market for my first pit stop of my bloggers’ meet up cum local food tasting trip. At first, we wanted to go for steamboat but Juliana “ffk”-ed me again, so we opted for night market instead. The night market is very big and has a lot of varieties of food. There is nothing special about the night market and the food, except the fact that you will only see Chinese people everywhere, not even a single Malay or Indian. However, with me around, the food will become special.
I walked past a “Tau Fu Fa 豆腐花” stall and somehow, it attracted me to give it a try. It was calling for me, “Jason, try me! Try me!” said the “Tau Fu Fa”. You might ask, what is so special about this “Tau Fu Fa” since you are able to get it everywhere and anytime. The “Tau Fu Fa” is very smooth, nothing but just smooth. It can basically glide down your esophagus like some liquid or porridge; you do not have to bite it at all. The “Tau Fu Fa” comes in a very small portion and costs only RM0.50 per bowl.

Next, it was “Apam Balik” on the menu. It has “Pandan” (screwpine leaves) flavouring instead of the usual vanilla and the size of the “Apam Balik” is huge, about 20cm to 25cm in diameter. It smells very good when they are making it, which made me wanted to give it a try. It costs RM0.70 per piece. According to Domestic Goddess, it is called “Ban Chen Kueh 慢煎糕” in Penang but “Apam Balik” for people in Malacca. Is it “Apam Balik” or “Apom Balik”?

Then, as my mouth got itchy, I bought do-not-know-what-it-is to munch on. It is a variation of our Chinese’s “Kuih Kapit”. It is baked (?) in a mini sized wok and the difference between it and the normal “Kuih Kapit” is that it is very thin and only folded once. It is as thin as a piece of A4 paper and very crunchy. 3 pieces for RM1.00 and you must eat it when it is hot or comes right out from the wok. Domestic Goddess claimed it is “Apom Balik” though.

Opposite the “Kuih Kapit” stall, there is this stall that sells “Guo Zai”. It has 2 types – one contains a type of vegatable called “Ku Chai 韭菜” (Chinese Chives) while the other contains turnip. It tastes not too bad actually, but I am very sure there are better ones out there. It costs RM2 for 3 pieces. The stall owner claims it is another delicacy from Penang. (Why every thing has to come from Penang?)

Nowadays, you get to eat shark fin soup without going to a restaurant or attending a typical Chinese 10 courses dinner. I have seen this stall when I was in Multimedia University, Cyberjaya campus for the annual Chinese Language Society’s “Chinese New Year Extravaganza” last year. Although I doubt real shark fins are being used in this stall and most of the restaurants; but at least, there are crabmeats inside. In conclusion, it tastes very good considering the price is at RM3.50 per bowl. (Endangered species? What is that?)

“Wun Zai Gou 碗仔糕” was one of my victims for that night. Instead of the usual “Wun Zai Gou” that is made from glutinous rice and basically tasteless, you get a flavoured “Wun Zai Gou”. It has 3 different flavours – red bean, corn and sweet potato. It tastes quite well as I do not get to eat this in Malacca at all. For the price of RM0.70 per piece, it is definitely worth a try.

We spotted a stall selling roasted “Tau Fu” and we decided to give it a try. We bought 8 pieces for RM4.00. It is basically some sliced cucumbers stuffed inside a huge “Tau Fu Pok”. It is then slightly roasted over charcoal fire to make it crispy on the outside. Before you eat them, you have to pour the crunched peanuts and sour plum sauce on it. You also have an option to include some roasted squid or not, which we did not choose to.

Before we left the night market, I bought homemade ice cream for dessert at the cost of RM0.70 per stick. There are 3 flavours for you to choose from - red bean, durian and “Cempedak” (Very similar to jack fruit.). I do not really like red bean and I have tasted durian before, so I opted for “Cempedak” instead. It tastes good too! It does not come with nice wrapping or packaging, just a small piece of paper wrapping the ice cream. It took me barely 5 minutes to finish it but the taste lasted in my mouth for about 10 minutes.

After we had our dinner at Lee Hwee’s house, we went to a cafe that is similar to Wingz that I often frequent in Malacca. The cafe’s name is “Feeling” and it is near South City Plaza. Although it is a little cramp inside the shop, but the atmosphere and the interior design are very good. However, they have the lousiest and the most cheapskate menu I have ever seen in such similar cafe. It is just a normal piece of orange coloured paper with no pictures and any descriptions of the food and beverage.

The beverage sucks to the maximum too. The fact that I only drank 1/10 of the beverage is the best proof and the bloody drink is RM10.90. It was a total rip off! I do not remember what name of the beverage is, I think it is something “Green Island……”. I shall order sky juice (plain water) if I visit this cafe again. I do not recommend this place for good food and drink, try at your own risk.

However, the performers on that night were 2 guys who sing and are able to play the guitar very well. The grouping is quite odd as in most cafes; it is either 2 girls and 1 guy or 1 girl and 2 guys. Besides, the waitress that served us is cute! Her smile is sweet! It took me lots of effort, trials and errors to take a clear shot of the girl. I managed to slip a note that I wrote in Mandarin to her while paying the bills.

“To the only girl that is a cashier and a waitress for the night, (Other girls were working as bar tender beverage maker.)
Your smile is very sweet.
You look beautiful. :-)
From
Jason, Malacca.”
-blush blush-
I did not leave my contact number but I did leave my email address. After all, who will give his/her contact number to a stranger? Not even me, what more a cute girl like her? Therefore, email address is a better way. No? The guys behind our table tried to get her phone number from her, but they failed and she gave them a very embarrassed and annoyed smile. –lol- As for me, when I went to collect the receipt, she gave me her sweet smile again.
-blush blush-

Now, back to my studies. –sighs-
P.S :
If you know the exact name for the food that I mentioned above, do tell me and I will edit them later. Thanks to Momof2, also known as Domestic Goddess for helping me with the Chinese words and exact name of the food.
Coming up next : Meeting Mr. Kiasi, Carol Tee and Kai Hong.

The Apam Balik, is actually refered to as ‘Tai Kao Min’ in Ipoh, basically meaning ‘big face’. I really missed the pasar malam food…although I tried shark fin in pasar malam. And as for the kuih kapit, in Ipoh it sounded like ‘Apong’. I had no idea what language is that. Hehe
