Another Malacca Delicacy – “Beef Soup”

July 11th, 2005.

Categories: Eating..., Eating... In Malacca

If I say Malacca is famous for its “Nyonya” dishes and “Hainanese Chicken Rice Ball”, nobody will disagree with me, right? Although it is the truth that Hainanese does cook the best chicken rices! I bet a lot of Hainanese bloggers like James, Auntie Lilian, Twinsmom and Papi will agree. (Wah~! All the heavyweight bloggers. Anymore Hainanese bloggers?) However, I am not doing a food review on the chicken rice though (I have yet to, anyway.) but let me introduce another delicacy found in Malacca – “Beef Soup 牛腩”.

“Loi’s Bak Kut Teh and Beef stall” is the shop’s name. It is not a shop actually as he uses the front yard of his old double storey house to do his business. His stall only consists of 8 to 9 tables only. Therefore, it is very noisy and cramp when there are a lot of people or families having dinner together at the same place. So, it is better to come early rather than during peak hours like 8PM onwards. The shop’s business hour is from 6.30PM up to 10.30PM, so the best time is around 7PM to 7.30PM.

There are two things for you to order only – “Bah Kut Teh” or “Beef Soup”. However, I usually have “Beef Soup”. After you place your order, he will start mixing the ingredients and boil it over low fire. Once it is ready to be served, he will chop some chinese cabbage and put it on top of the soup. After all, it is not healthy to eat all-meat-only meal. –coughs coughs- The soup is boiling when it is served and you have to be very careful as it burns your tongue or if you have kids around.

Spreading away the chinese cabbage, you will see the ingredients treasures. The beef meatballs, raw beef meats, beef stomachs and lots of “tau ki”. (”Tau ki” in English is beancurd, according to Chris.) He does not put all the beef into the soup and boil them, as some people prefer to eat them not so cooked. Therefore, he will put some of them on top and you get to “cook” your own beef till how cooked you want it to be.

Just like any other “Bak Kut Teh” meal (Although I was not eating “Bak Kut Teh”.), you will be served with “oil rice 油饭” instead of white rice. The rice is not very oily like those you have tasted in other shops, but there is nothing to shout about the rice too. If this is your first time eating, you might think it sucks because it tastes quite different from other “Beef Soup” and it has this do-not-know-how-to-describe taste in the soup. Therefore, you need some time to get use to its taste, like I did. However, it is the soup that makes it special and outstanding.

How good is it, you ask?

It is this good!

How much per head? I suppose it is about RM8 per head. I had 2 bowls of rice, 1 chinese tea and 1 “Beef Soup” for RM9.20. Cheap? Expensive? Let us take a closer view of his “kitchen”.

In order to go to this shop, all you need to do is find your way to Ayer Keroh or towards Malacca toll. I will be describing the direction as if you are coming from the toll. After you exit the toll, go straight all the way until you pass Jaya Jusco, which is on your right. Go slightly forward and you will see Everhome, a furniture shop at at junction. Turn left into the junction and go straight. The shop is on your right hand side and it is opposite the Malaysia Custom Academy. For Malaccans, it is at Bukit Baru and before the 24 hours Jiki’s food court.

This is not “Beef Bak Kut Teh”. Just incase you got it wrongly, it is not “Beef Bak Kut Teh”.

First time i see beef bakuteh!!! I am not a beef person….so dont think i will like it. Even for the normal bakuteh, i normally have an extremely plain one with only the ‘fu chok’, ‘taufu pok’ and soup…..kind of sick of the meat too ;P.
