Best Chendol In Malacca
My last visit to Jonker Street was on 12th of March, together with April when she came to Malacca with her parents. Since I was pretty messed up yesterday with various incidents and people, I decided to have something delicious to cheer myself up. Chee Yong and his girl friend, Lee Hwee was in Malacca to watch Penny Tai’s showcase. Therefore, we decided to meet up in Jonker Street after the showcase and my replacement class.
We headed for the famous “Chendol” shop, which is located somewhere in the middle of the street. The shop name is “Kedai Antik 88″ and you will never miss it. The shop lives up to its name. There are a lot of antiques inside the shop, from treasures like bowls, plates, jades and vases that were dug up from the sea or passed down from generations to generations. There are also various old photos, photos and picture frames of Elvis Presley, Bruce Lee and Teressa Teng and Malacca town during the 1940’s and 50’s. Wooden tables and chairs are used in the shop. Even the lights used are antiques! The house is very long, at least 2 times longer than the current normal terrace house. There is a reason why the house was built so, but I am a bit lazy today. Forgive me.

There are various “Chendol” sold here but I personally suggest the original “Baba Chendol”. Since everybody knows what “Chendol” is, lets go straight to the point. The wonderful thing about this “Chendol” is the “Gula Melaka” they use. The “Gula Melaka” is very pure, as in not mixing with too much (or maybe without) water. It is very thick and highly concentrated. It basically “glues” the ice into a ball of ice. The fragrance can be smelt even before you step into the shop. Not only that, the coconut milk is very thick too! With that, the best “Chendol” in Malacca comes from this shop.

I had my dinner in this shop too. I ordered “Nyonya Laksa” and it was so-so only. I have a better place for “Nyonya Laksa” though. Next time introduce to you all, ok? However, they have increased their price. A bowl of “Chendol” now costs RM1.70, instead of RM1.50. They even have uniforms already! Heck! RM0.20 because it has upgraded to a tourist spot?!

Got to go to Melaka one day, but in my imagination Melaka town is always hot and not much of trees and shades there right?

Depends on where you going to, if its those tourist spot, yeah, not much trees and shades. Bring an umbrella or a cap. Besides, Melaka kinda hot nowadays. Hehe, come to Melaka lah~! Jason, sui !! Ok !!
Will plan that out and oh ! I want the famous chicken rice also ok?
I last had the chicken rice beside the river like 5 years ago, and my family was wondering how did they manage to make the rice to become like a ball.
I said, simple, take a scoop of rice, put it in arm pit, and kiap the rice kuat-kuat.
and there you get a chicken rice which looked like a ball….
Hey look there is even a free curly hair -_-” attached to it !!!
June 26th, 2005 22:46
Philips : Chicken rice only mah! No problem, but you pay har! Very jalat one each time I eat. -sweat- Not for student like me. Haha, actually very easy to make one. All you have to do is put slightly more water, (more than the normal amount of water you used, but not until you boil porridge lah~!) After the rice is cooked, scoop up some of the rice of press press, roll roll into a ball size loh~! The rice sticks because the rice is abit “mian mian” “lembik lembik”, something like those banana leave rice that you eat in indian shop. :D

Chendol is Bahasa Malaysian for “shaved ice”? Looks yummy… Is the ice safe to eat there though?
May 21st, 2008 01:19
Boyd R. Jones : Chendol is the name for that shaved ice beverage/food, or to be exact, the green colour worms look alike thing. Yes, it is safe.
