Genting or Redang?
May 7th, 2005, Jason
Every trimester break, most of the students will plan a holiday trip with their university mates or hometown friends to give themselves a break and as a reward for themselves after one whole trimester of studying. However, every time I ask them where their destination is, most of them will answer me – Genting or Pulau Redang. Honestly, I am going to be surprised if their destination is neither one. Although I have nothing against Genting or Pulau Redang, I really wonder what makes them to choose Genting or Pulau Redang as their dream holiday destination. Below are my personal view / opinions, do feel free to comment and discuss, but there is no reason for you to accept what I have written here.
Genting Highlands
There are only 2 main attractions – indoor and outdoor theme park. If it is raining cats and dogs on that day, you only have indoor theme park as your only choice.
There is nothing much to eat and the food is slightly over priced. There was one time when I was charged RM1.50 for a piece of “Roti Kosong”!
There will be queue every where, from the roller coaster ride to the toilets. If it is peak season like weekends, school holidays or festive season, the queue can be as long as the queue during an audition for Malaysian Idol or when the ticket for Jay Chau’s concert is on sale.
Another attraction will be the casino which is basically for those who are 21 years old and above. Jason only mumbles, but does not gamble (except Chinese New Year). Therefore, the casino does not attract me although with my size, height and look, I can sneak inside even though I am below 21. For your information, I am 21 now.
If by screaming or laughing out loudly are part of your method to relax yourself, then this reason does not applicable to you. I do not see the point of screaming your lungs out or get excited (frightened?) by the rides in order to relax yourself. I believe that I am more exhausted after a whole day of excitement and therefore, I do not feel relaxed at all. After all, a holiday trip is to relax, recharge and rest your body.
Pulau Redang
It became a popular holiday destination after the movie “Summer Holiday” which was starred by Richie Ren and Sammi Cheng. I wonder what the island will be if the movie was shot in another island like Pulau Tioman.
I suppose the main attraction will be snorkeling in the crystal clear water, looking at the fishes swimming right in front of your eyes and the beautiful corals at the sea bed. It is fun, but to snorkel for 3 days continuously (I assume that the package is a 4 days 3 nights.), is not that a little bit too much? I think I will be bored of it by the second time.

The place has been promoted too much by various travel agencies. The price of a Pulau Redang package can go as low as RM248, as promoted by MMU’s Travel Club. I supposed during the previous MATA (Is it MATA or MATTA?) travel fair, the island’s package was selling like hot cakes.
The last time I went to Genting Highlands was 1999, about 6 years ago, if not mistaken. My family previously chose Pulau Redang as part of the family trip early this year, but I did not join them because I was having my mid-term examinations during that time. However, when they came back and was telling me how fun it was, I was not interested at all (My sister – Jamie gave up telling how fun the trip was.) and I did not feel jealous or regret for not joining them. –sweat-
I am blogging about two currently most popular holiday destination because I am going for a holiday trip tomorrow with my close friends (Photos of them will be uploaded later.). No, we are not going to Genting Highlands or Pulau Redang. We are going Cameron Highlands and we are going to visit Bidor, Ipoh and Kuala Kangsar.
We chose Cameron Highlands because the place is very relaxing, easy going, lots of green coloured sceneries and sight seeing places, cooling and not time consuming. Besides, the 4 star hotel / apartment that we are going to stay are half of the weekends / peak season rate. The hotel has a swimming pool, sauna, gym, tennis / squash / basketball court and jungle trekking. (Hopefully we can book the place.) There are a lot of foods – my favourite “Tom Yam” steamboat at one particular shop, cheap but delicious chicken / beef / lamb chops for breakfast, fresh local strawberries, 100% pure strawberry ice cream / ice and the yummy golden fried sweet potatoes. We are stopping at Bidor for Duck / Herbal Soup Noodles, 50 cents sized Wan Tan with big prawns inside, chilled white coffee, “lou poh beng”, “gai zai beng” and the shop’s specialty. We might skip Ipoh, but “Yim Guk Gai”, “Nga Choi Gai”, Fu Shan’s “Dim Sum” will be nice if we manage to make it. As for Kuala Kangsar, I have to thank my friends as they agreed to go there for the sake of me – to meet Juliana Ooi, owner of the wonderful and well written blog of “J”ded. Too bad, I cannot meet Carol Tee at the same time. –sad-
Although I do spend a lot of time connecting myself to the internet, I do have my offline life too! I am going to enjoy this, for sure! It has been a long time since I go for my own holidays because I have been taking up part time jobs every trimester break since I came to MMU.
I will be back with lots of photos. I promised.
P/S :
Ju, I can’t wait to meet you on Monday. Hopefully, I will not have my tongue tied so tight till I am not able to talk. –lol-
Carol, it is a little sad that I am not able to meet you in Kuala Kangsar, together with Ju. However, I am sure we shall meet up someday in K.L., and may be that time, we can call Mr. Kiasu, Tiu Nia Sing, Emily (She wants to meet Juliana.), Mun Kit and may be even the wonderful SAHMs.
Since I am not able to blog on Sunday, I wish all mothers “Happy Mother’s Day”!
